Like Jeff said, - there are areas out side the city which are OK - places like San Pedro and Escazu. Initially it's worth sticking to the outskirts of San Jose - cable etc is no problem and good place for a base to check out the rest of the country. |

Hey slapass,
Escazu, Santa Ana are great places - avoid staying in downtown - just visit there is best. Hit me up if you need any help or want to meet up! |
I love GFY! Thanks guys and yeah we should hook up if interested. I will take you and yours on the town in exchange for knowing where to go :)
Sly, I travel a lot. it is the biggest perk of our business. Bringing a friend their from a different country. Can we travel to Miami on that too? gotta call my lawyer. freaking red tape is insane for foreigners. Makes you glad you have the blue passport. |

Seriously... San Jose can be a problem - it just a matter of common sense most of the time and no different to any city. The main problem is petty theft and that applies everywhere. I've never ever had a problem other than minor petty theft. The people are very friendly and genuine - same applies to law enforcement. Best area for beaches are on the Pacific coast. If you want some extreme eco mixed with the beaches - that's on the Caribbean coast. |
PS.... And respect goes a long way here :) The people are generally polite and courteous - and showing the same back, seems to be meaningful.

I'd strongly recommend avoiding walking alone by night. The thieves target lonely foreigners. Stick with the crowded places and you'll enjoy CR at its fullest. Avoid doing deals on the street and going in local's homes alone, unless you know them already. And don't hit locals' girlfriends, that can bring you a lot of trouble. There are plenty of lonely girls and hookers of all kinds, so stay away from their gf's. As for beaches, I personally don't like the beaches here, they are too dark, but it's just me. |

As for as the dark beaches.. you mean the water, sand? |

Check them out a bit. Usually if they are with other girls, they are alone. The hookers will hit on you, you can bet on that. Go downtown, to the Marlin Bar at Del Rey hotel and you'll have 10's of hookers all over you. Some of them looking really good. El Pueblo is about bars, dancing, not hooking bars.
About the beaches, I don't like the sand. It's volcanic, though darker. I love white and golden sand. |
