Zune domains and sites

Zune has seemed to flood the new domain registrations. Have you picked anything good up? Do you know what Zune is? I'll let you discover it on your own.

On July 21, 2006, Microsoft launched a viral marketing campaign for Zune. The teaser site ComingZune.com features a short animation of a man, a rabbit, and a very small person with Regina Spektor's song "Us" in the background, followed by the unveiling of the official Zune logo and a form to sign up for updates.

yes, this is the new "ipod killer" device from Microsoft. It is expected to be released in October time..... I don't think they will change the name of the device...... good article here about it :

In this instance i don't think it would be very wise to register any ZUNE type domains.

(1) Trademark owners are now suing for not only the domain names but also damages associated with your use of their TM terms.... they are essentially bypassing URDP and WIPO and going direct to the infringer. This could prove costly if you have one domain that is infringing. Imagine what it would be like if you have a bunch of them.....

(2) I wouldn't be touching anything "MICROSOFT" , they now have the typo-patrol script. They will already know today who has registered what. I'd imagine the initial Cease and Desist legal letters will already be drafted..... it's a lose/lose situation for any potential TM domainers in this instance.

I understand the TM aspect but I think you're wrong that they're going to just blanket kill anyone with a 'zune' in their domain. These are not your usual typos. There must be an endless amount of sites setup for xbox support, services, fans, forums, directories, sales, etc.. using Xbox names for example that have been around for years and years and I haven't seen them being targeted yet. I'm sure it's possible at some point, but it's not on the same level as someone registering a typo like Micrsoft.com, etc..

The problem is that they CAN go after you if you use any of their TM names in any form of URL unfortunately.

With them openly working on typo-partol software I think we can all see where Microsoft are heading with this..... they will target ANY site that uses or attempts to use anything similar to their TM terms in a domain URL.....

I don't think it will be too long before we see this happening...

There are fair use guidelines on usage of MS's Xbox logo and name for example that are meant for fan sites. I'll bet that Zune is treated the same. :2 cents:
