So here is the scary story as I have heard it.

You are going along you have your little site, you want more money so you sign up for some affiliate programs on similar sites or sites you think your members or surfers will sign up for, you look over the sites info, all seems good. You sign up. Then months later you find out YOU could be going to jail for upto 5 years for inadvertently advertising child porn!!, what you say?? Well apparently one of those affiliates programs added some underage content to their site that YOU were pushing traffic too. Better hope you look good in Orange.

Sounds crazy ? well apparently ( and than god I never joined this affiliate program ) the crazy Justin Berry ( justinsfreinds.com ) was just that AND apparently the DOJ is aiming its guns at ALL the affiliates signed up to sent traffic to that site !

So basically you are now possibly facing jail time for something someone unrelated to you and who you have probably never spoken to or really done personal business with apart from sign up to an affiliate site did.

This is exactly why I've been a strong opponent of the promotion of amateur webcam sites. Nobody is there to check the ID's of guys and girls who operate out of their bedrooms. They answer to nobody.

Even if they are 18 the possibility exists that they could bring an underage friend on. Again, nobody to answer to... and you could be unknowingly promoting this.


Affiliates also need to use caution when promoting actual sponsor companies. Once you are in their database, you are connected to everything in their site portfolio. Even sites you don't send a single hit to.

I personally use extreme caution when joining sponsors who have any amount of Russian and east Euro content. The fake ID rate among teens in those countries is much higher than in the western world. I don't know what % have gotten into porn, but I'm sure the number would be surprising if an accurate study could be done.

I signed up for your affiliate program, but your affiliate traffic goes to a page with an error. From that page, there is no link for surfers to enter your site!

This is a BIG problem you should fix.

You know why this is happening ? Because thousands of affiliates have been sending traffic to big scams before (xpics, serge, dialers etc etc).

We participate as much as the people publishing it. Better start checking what you are selling.

If a video store was found with child porn in it's porn section, even if it was the distributor's fault, I'm sure they'd get charged too.

sadly few have business sense to understand to be prepared to loss a bit of money (or spend it) to keep your company honest and safe. Far too many webmasters go with the cheapest deal or the program that offers the most in return only to find that they are being swindled or in this case, set up for CP. Sometimes we forget - if it sounds too good to be true - it usually is !!!
