BEIJING, July 12 (Xinhuanet) -- The U.S. scientists found that some magical substance in mushrooms may have the function of altering consciousness.
Roland Griffiths, a professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, led the study, accordint to the journal Psychopharmacology Tuesday.
In their study, two-thirds of the 36 healthy, educated volunteers, given capsules of psilocybin extracted from the mushrooms, claimed they had what they described as a spiritual experience.
They meant a sense of pure awareness, transcending time and space and feeling positive moods like joy, peace and love.
They claimed it changed their lives for the better. Not only that, one-third said the experience was the most significant of their lives, likening it to a child's birth or a parent's death.
Two months later after the capsule consumption, almost 80 per cent of the volunteers reported feeling ongoing positive effects.
Psilocybin might be useful in treating addictions, pain or depression, Griffiths suggested.
Under US law, psilocybin is a Schedule I hallucinogen, a category that also includes heroin. The U.S. government has approved its use in medical experiments.Enditem
