House OKs bill to rein in online gambling
Well except for state lotteries and horse racing. Hmmmmmmm.
The House voted 317-93 for the bill, which would allow authorities to work with Internet providers to block access to gambling Web sites. Wonder if this has any future ramifications for porn? Reps. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Jim Leach, R-Iowa sponsored the bill. They successfully beat back an amendment to strip out exemptions in the legislation for the horse racing industry and state lotteries. Leach said the problem is particularly acute for young people who are frequently on the Internet. "Never before has it been so easy to lose so much money so quickly at such a young age," he said. Yet you'll still allow these same young people to lose their saving in state lotteries and horse racing? Or are you saying that state lotteries and horse racing aren't addictive forms of gambling? Critics argued that regulating the $12 billion industry would be better than outlawing it. Said Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., "Prohibition didn't work for alcohol. It won't work for gambling." Now there is a smart person. Considering the deficits we are running up due to the huge tax cuts by Bush you'd think bringing in an extra source of revenue to the US coffers would be welcomed. |
bet they hammer them first with a tax
|
so they're trying to ban online gambling? hopefully not...
|
The problem with online casions is that most of them are rigged and it's very hard too do quality control... THey are also loosing a lot of tax money.

Sounds like something from China http://cdn.aol.com/netfind/gr/flags/...eoples_rep.gif |

And if they can do for gaming - adult would also be one of the next targets. |
from what i have read, they are only going to block US ips, from viewing online gamming sites, which most will get around with proxies. If a casino/betting site is doing what they are supposed to do, then their focus is on traffic that is legal and legit to gamble online

The senate is already saying they will veto this bill when it gets to them.
|
People want Porn and people want Online Gambling. They will simply request that their ISP unblock it, or go with one who does not. :2 cents:

No silly, the US government restricting internet sites = freedom The Chinese government restricting internet sites = censorship. What's so hard to understand about that? Freedom is slavery. |
I hope it gets killed in the Senate cuz Casinos/Online gaming is EXTREMELY lucrative for mainstream webmasters.
