It's hard to tell because its coloring is different out of water, but it almost looks like a young zebra shark to me.

NichePay_Manny 07-10-2006 01:36 PM

bad ass Art I wish u kept it .

BV 07-10-2006 01:39 PM

From it's features I can guess it's probably in the nurse shark family (a bottom feeder) mostly feeds on crustations (crabs and such)

unless of course it finds a nice hunk of something else stuck on a hook :upsidedow

StuartD 07-10-2006 01:40 PM

Looks like a Klingon shark :winkwink:

Just kiddin, I really don't know. Looks pretty cool though.

i dont think its a zebra.. the definitive mark about this shark is the 2 spikes on the back

i dont think it's a nurse, but i agree that it has similar characteristics. the biggest problem is we cant see the tail. Nurse family have a heterocercal tail. this shark does have some distinctively wide fins. Let me look in my shark book.

BV 07-10-2006 01:46 PM

nope i was wrong, its a horn shark, i was right about it's diet though :-)
http://www.mbayaq.org/efc/living_spe...ab=5&inhab=212

While sleeker sharks rule the open waters, horn sharks hide out in the shadows of the seafloor. Theyhahaha8217;re not graceful swimmers and don't move around like their streamlined kinhahaha8212;in fact, sometimes horn sharks use their strong pectoral fins to crawl along rocks.

These small, elusive sharks prefer shallow waters less than 40 feet deep. They spend their days hiding under ledges, in caves or among kelp and other seaweeds; they hunt at night. Horn sharks feed on seafloor invertebrates, especially sea urchins and crabs, and occasionally on small fishes.

The horn sharkhahaha8217;s average length is just over three feet, and ithahaha8217;s named for its large fin spines.

Diet crustaceans, sea urchins, small fishes, molluscs

Size to 4 feet (1.2 m)

Range Central California to Baja California

Relatives bullhead sharks

Conservation Notes Caught by divers for sport and for their spines, horn shark populations have declined in southern California in areas with intense diver activity. Their spines are made into jewelry. Although therehahaha8217;s no commercial market for horn sharks, theyhahaha8217;re accidentally caught as bycatch, usually in crab traps, gillnets or trawling nets.

Cool Facts Females lay spiral egg cases, which they wedge into creviceshahaha8212;this makes the egg cases stay put. Each egg case contains one pup, which takes between six and nine months to hatch.

Slow and sluggish, horn sharks spend their days hidden in crevices or among rockshahaha8212;unseen for the most part since their coloration matches the muddy browns and greens of their surroundings.

The scientific name Heterodontus is the Greek word for "different teeth." The teeth lining the front of the horn sharkhahaha8217;s jaws are sharp and used for grasping prey; the teeth in the back are flat and molarlike, useful for crushing shellfishes. The common name "horn" refers to the spines in front of each dorsal fin.
