IMPORTANT GFY CONSENSUS NEEDED: Admitting to drug usage on a job application......

I would like a consensus from the GFY patrons on your opinions of admitting to drug usage on a job application..

its a double edge sword..

if you are honest and say yes, you could be immediately weeded out..

if you are dishonest and say no, you get past the screener but you are now a liar..

what are your thoughts and how would you handle the situation.

MaddCaz 07-10-2006 12:08 PM

"but now you are a liar"

Dude, this is easily the stupidest question I've ever seen asked on GFY. And i've seen some WHOPPERS.

I honestly didn't think it was legal to ask that question on an application.

Drug tests is why I started working for myself.

Why would that be? They can have random drug tests.

Tom_PM 07-10-2006 12:11 PM

I dont understand.. You mean if someone says "yes" to something like "do you use drugs?"

Thats easy, dont hire them.

If they say "no", it doesnt mean they're lying. It means no, lol :)
If you later catch them on the job on drugs, or with drugs, fire them.
Or if you drug test and they've said "no" but tested positive, dont hire them.

robfantasy 07-10-2006 12:15 PM

let me clarify............... experimented with drugs, like done it before in the past..

not a frequent user.

MaddCaz 07-10-2006 12:15 PM

WHY would you admit to that to a job???

RayVega 07-10-2006 12:16 PM

Deny, deny, deny, It's that simple.

That's true. But I didn't think you could actually ask that question on an application or in an interview.

It's one of those things that puts the employer in a tough place. You could suspect it, but you can't legally ask (or so I thought). Then when the drug tests roll in, you're suspicions are confirmed, but NOW you can't even fire the person. As an employer you have to pay to help them with their problem.

In Canada, you're not allowed to ask the person's age either. I would assume for discrimination protection.

You also can't ask if they've ever been in jail. You CAN ask "Have you ever been convicted of a crime for which you have not been granted a pardon?"

All questions just vague enough to protect the applicants rights...according to the lawyers.

In Canada you can legaly deny a drug test and nobody cant do shit about it! Smoke Weed! Sniff Coke!:winkwink:

MaDalton 07-10-2006 12:25 PM

drug test are not allowed over here - and some questions (like drug use, pregnancy) are not allowed for privacy reasons

madawgz 07-10-2006 12:28 PM

well if they had some person with a similar application and they havnt done drugs... you wouldnt get picked...

scottybuzz 07-10-2006 12:29 PM

say yes and dont get the job
