Yea I just saw that on the drudge report. I told you guys it would happen. I'm rather surprised that it beat star wars, or even LOTR but the movie was well deserving of its spot in history. I didnt' know X-Men 3 did as well as it did, but I guess it was #3. I guess its right to call Pirates 2 the "Empire Strikes Back" of our time.

hova 07-08-2006 10:57 AM

looking forward to that one

won't make as much as LOTR worldwide; afterall, Return of the King is the #2 grossing movie of all time after Titanic. But domestically? Thats another story, with the amazing start its off to.

The Demon 07-08-2006 11:01 AM

I didn't know Return of the King was #2, I thought Star Wars IV was #2. At any rate it's a disgrace to have Titanic as the #1 grossing movie of all time..

Tdog 07-08-2006 11:05 AM

I thought "ET" was the best all time.

The Demon 07-08-2006 11:05 AM

ET was in the top 10 I believe.

ROTK and Titanic are the only 2 movies to ever crack a billion dollars worldwide. ROTK did 1.12 Billion and Titanic did 1.8 Billion.

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/world/

Two of the top 4 movies of all time are the last two LOTR movies but Titanic clearly leads the way, which is even more remarkable because when Titanic was released, the studios were making 5 times the amount of movies (5X the competition) as in the mid 70's, when Jaws and Star Wars came out. Movies now have a much shorter shelf life, and are pushed out of theaters way faster, so what Titanic did was the most incredible feat in motion picture history as far as making $$$ goes. It even started poorly, but had the most remarkable legs and sustainability ever, whether one likes the film or not.

Bansheelinks 07-08-2006 11:14 AM

Rival studios (not Disney) are now predicting Disney's juggernaut playing in 4,133 theaters will do at least $130 million for its opening weekend, easily destroying Spiderman's No. 1 three-day weekend record of $114.8 million.

Unreal. And it isn't even named "Aquaman." :1orglaugh

The Demon 07-08-2006 11:28 AM

Makes sense I guess. I could have sworn SW did a billion but as I recall, they weren't doing worldwide back in the 70s like they are doing today. I still think SW was the greatest trlogy ever followed by LOTR. But yea the whole LOTR thing makes sense, part 3 was sold out for a week here before people could really go see it.

Nope, not even "Revenge of the Sith," with that great opening day start, did $1 Billion, thats how hard it is to attain that figure worldwide (Sith did $849 Million total, which is outstanding to say the least). I think Star Wars is the more popular franchise in America, but not worldwide as the foreign box office clearly shows that belongs to LOTR series. But if "Sith" couldn't do a billion, I don't think Pirates 2 will have the legs to do that amount worldwide either. Especially considering its a July release, and movie receipts decline in August.

I think the next billion dollar movie will be "The Incredibles 2."

The Demon 07-08-2006 12:01 PM

yes you do make sense there, however I do believe Pirates 2 will come awfully close, and I think Pirates 3 really does have a good chance of hitting the $1 billion mark. Maybe Transformers? Lol.

:1orglaugh

it was cool to find out that Depp based his Jack Sparrow pirate character on Keith Richards, however.

:thumbsup

selena 07-08-2006 01:23 PM

Good. Maybe Johnny will win an Oscar now. :)

The Demon 07-08-2006 01:23 PM

Depp does a better Keith than Keith himself

I always wondered what it would be like to act like a guy without a liver. Ah well, at least Depp now knows.

They'd never give it to him for his playing Jack Sparrow. One I really loved him in that hardly anyone talks about is "The Ninth Gate." Outstanding.

I've got that one and it is good. :) I have a Johnny library. ;)

You may be right, but from what I read it is rare for comedic roles to get nominations, and he got one for the first one, as well as the SAG award.

I can at least hope. :)

The Demon 07-08-2006 06:28 PM

I disagree, I am sure Depp will win an Oscar for Pirates 2. His performance was most definitely oscar worthy.

What are you talking about? playing a gay pirate is an interesting take but hardly oscar worthy.

MaddCaz 07-08-2006 06:36 PM

I thought Spidey 2 had that record? Or is it the opening WEEKEND...

tony286 07-08-2006 06:48 PM

good because Star Wars 3 really sucked

Sammy4u 07-08-2006 07:47 PM

Saw it the other day. It was really good. It was rather long but that just gave me moer time to look at Johnny. lol

Matt 26z 07-08-2006 07:48 PM

Does that take into account ticket inflation?

I don't know about opening weekend, but all time goes to Gone With The Wind and not Titanic if you factor ticket inflation.

Titan 07-08-2006 08:02 PM

POTC 2 got reviewed really bad so doubtful it'll do much after the weekend.

The Demon 07-08-2006 08:26 PM

As you can see, nobody cared about it's review. It got wonderful reviews on IMDB. And yes, playing a gay pirate while impersonating Keith Richards is worthy of an oscar.

beemk 07-08-2006 08:32 PM

when are they going to actually start going by ticket sales? their system doesnt work with inflation.

gecko 07-08-2006 09:58 PM

can't wait to see it

UtahSaints 07-08-2006 10:13 PM

Doctor Dre 07-08-2006 10:15 PM

Ticket inflation. Misleading. Here's why. Due to home video, there are now seven times the amount of movies being made now than there were in the mid to late 70s. What does this mean? Well remember when internet porn was in vogue and relatively new to people in the mid-90s? There were way way way fewer sites and less competition, and more money to be had by the players. Same thing with the movies. More movies means movies have a way shorter window in the theaters to make $$$ and get moved out really fast. Movies like Jaws, The Sting, and Star Wars in the 70's were the only game in town, and regularily played in many locales for 30 consecutive weeks. And during their runs, they had few new releases to contend with. They sucked up all the action. Much less your bringing up Gone With the Wind, which back then had virtually no competition whatsoever.

This means that Titanic had the greatest motion picture run in movie history in the theaters, by far. Even with increased competition and new release challenging it week after week, it remained number one, and had the greatest legs of any movie ever.

The Demon 07-09-2006 12:01 AM

Damn that Leonardo Di Caprio

StickyGreen 07-09-2006 12:04 AM

Bansheelinks 07-09-2006 08:29 PM
