An idea for another way GFY can make money from advertising...

Those little ads to the left under my name gave me an idea....

why not allow people that own businesses to purchase that space under their name? So, every time they post that image shows up.

right now it shows up every third post as this:
http://www.gofuckyourself.com/skins/...ugh134_100.gif

but wouldn't it be cool if I could pay $25 a month or some shit to always have my company name and link in that space any time I post?

Jace 07-08-2006 02:38 AM

basically, it would be just like an avatar, but purchased and linkable

$5 submissions 07-08-2006 02:38 AM

I like it. It can't be turned off like sigs can. What would the rules be, though?

darksoul 07-08-2006 02:40 AM

yet another reason for more postwhores
fuck that

yeah, that was mainly the point...it is there and can't be gotten rid of

no clue about rules, i would guess that each ad the user purchases would be reviewed first before it is added

and other users can sell their space for a cut....say the cost is $50 a month, and you agree to let me have your space, gfy would get $30 and you would get $20 for the use of that space

Not necessarily. Each account would have to pay to run the avatar ad.

does gfy care if people post whore? i doubt it....in fact, that is something they probably like more of as long as it isn't abused

Selling rights and perks.

Exactly! Great idea, Jace. I hope if they adopt it they give you a lil something something for the idea. Maybe free lifetime avatar ad :thumbsup

It might seem like a good idea but if you weigh the loss of pageviews and activity (revenue from current model) vs. revenues generated from memberships it might not make economic sense.

right, and same thing goes with sigs, you abuse it you lose it...and it is enforced way more often than you think it is

mfps 07-08-2006 02:47 AM

well the current sig promotions model revolve around the ability of promoters to slap on banners or buttons in their sig. There's no cost to them. The only cost is for the promoter that pays per post. The model Jace is proposing involves whoever is flying the avatar ad to PAY for the privilege of flying it. Even if the sponsor will pay for it, there's going to be TWO costs involved--paid avatar rights and pay per post. There's an extra hurdle--maybe to the tune of an extra $500 to $1500 per month (I don't know how GFY would price this should they adopt it). This extra hurdle alone makes it different from the raw volume of regular sig promoters.

themanager 07-08-2006 02:49 AM

Good suggestion too.

darksoul 07-08-2006 02:50 AM

you're smart guys and I assume you understand the concept of targeted traffic
and gfy is not a source of trageted traffic right now.
More pageviews don't mean more money.
Its sad gfy doesn't realize this because they advertising prices go lower
all the time and they have to find more and more advertisers to cover the gaps.

You're wrong!
theres a cost, the top banner cost
Most sponsors buy that spot so that their sigwhores can have big sigs.

when is the last time you flew an ad on here? prices haven't changed that much...it is still a $100k+ a month board

You are overlooking those that pay people to fly sig buttons only. No need for top banner spots for those.

no, I'm not overlooking them, but those can be ignored because they do it in
such a stupid way that everyone ignores them.
and they eventually realize its not worth it and quit.

Top banner spots still cost $2500 since I've bought clients' spots for them before. Same price as when Webmasterlabor.Com was a top spot advertiser.

Also, going back to the issue of targeted traffic... if GFY goes on a paid membership system, much of the distinct appeal of this place goes away. It might be detrimental (from a revenue growth perspective) in the long run. There's many other adult webmaster forums that tried to be more "business oriented", they aren't as big (in terms of traffic, branding, and revenue volume) than GFY. Indeed, many stagnated and are basically dead.

I currently work for 2 companies that have top banner spots on gfy

darksoul 07-08-2006 02:56 AM

Isn't it a bit narrow minded that on a board supposely full of internet cluefull people we're still trying to catch business with banners ?

gooddomains 07-08-2006 02:57 AM

sig spotting

and its supposely a board with 50k+ (or 500k+ ?) page views a day :1orglaugh
think that they could charge for that if it was only target traffic.

not if it sells

but I do agree with that to an extent...but hell, if it works and is profitable, why stop?

seriously now, I haven't seen many companies tracking their gfy campaigns
The banner spots are used just for branding.

I am not quite understanding your motives for posting the way you are....are you making fun of gfy and the fact that it is profitable?

I am really lost here as to your point with all this bashing of the way gfy does business

The majority of businesses that advertise here focus on branding. Given the reputation and "who you know"-oriented nature of this biz, branding goes a long way in building credibility when you're trying to land a WHALE affiliate for your program OR you're trying to do a traffic swap/prepaid joins deal with a BIG company.

Just my :2 cents:

yes, the gfy is profitable for the owners no doubt.
I just think they could do more

you know, till now I thought wales are a bit smarter and they don't get with
the crowd.
You seem to think the opposite.

they have already made it quite clear on more occasions in not so many words that the only "more" they will be doing is to make "more" money

and I do not blame them one bit......if I owned this site I doubt I would work much harder than they do...it runs pretty damn well for me and the people aint that as long as you have the mindset to skip over the idiots

majority of the "whales" that I know of don't go near adult boards

exactly, so wouldn't sponsors be better trying to find business somewhere else ?

I think this board will go mainstream soon cause at some point
I've see zend banners running.

Then they would be losing money when someone skins the board.

I shouldn't be telling you this because in some areas you're smarter than I am
but don't you think that its common business practice that when your product value decreases you don't decrease the price but add more stuff to the package ?
And I think you can see how the advertising packages got more addons to keep the prices the same.

I don't know if my perspective is at all common, but when those every-three-messages buttons appeared, I almost quit GFY. They still bug the heck out of me precisely because they cannot be turned off and if I used a board often enough I would certainly take the time to find another.

The reason being that for me, the value of visiting GFY has been going down and down. Fewer sponsors post news here now than in the past and a lot have got better about emailing affiliates anyway. As to the rest, between the real kiddies, the sig whores and the handful of reps who really play GFY, the junk ratio has gone through the roof. So now, even with sigs off, I have to plough through a bunch of ads on every thread anyway? And if this idea were adopted it would be a lot worse.

I understand that it is necessary to try to reverse declining revenue, or simply make more, but I think GFY is very close to the point where a lot of things will turn out to be counter-productive very quickly.

scottybuzz 07-08-2006 04:08 AM

I dont care I learn to ignore adverts

MakingCoin_Fatal 07-08-2006 05:22 AM
