How reliable is Cogent these days?

We all know Cogent has had some issues in the past, but every company goes through growing pains. Would you trust them with your business now?

Do you think they are stable?

Anyone waiting for them to go down again?

Do you trust them to stay up and maintain suitable peering agreements?

No disrespect to Cogent intended. Looking for some truth here.

I am also interested this question.. Used cogent a couple years ago but I did not like their bandwidth. Thinking of going back

You get what you pay for. There's a reason why that bandwidth is cheap as dirt. :2 cents:

I think it's more than okay now I would use them but I wouldnt use them for something like a paysite equaly important just to be safe. :)

This is my feeling right now as well.

I doesn't matter now. Even back when they were supposed to be unreliable they were faster than Verio or any other backbone provider at times.

1) Yes, way in the past; that is long ago, and Cogent is very stable now a days - even more so then other "popular" carriers.

2) Very stable, every carrier has its issues - there isn't one that never does.

3) They haven't gone down in a long time, there might be some blips but again, that isn't isolated to Cogent.

4) Yes, infact they have and continue to improve their peering agreements tremendously! They have just signed with ATT for 3 additional 10GE peering ports. ATT being one of the largest provider of bandwidth for USA residential ISP's. Their peering with Level(3) - of which TimeWarner/RoadRunner use's is very good - I have TimeWarner at my house, and if I ever have any issues with my routes, its actually on the Level(3) side!

We are Cogent's largest customer in the world, and I can guarantee you that I know what I am talking about. Do not listen to all the haters who have no real experience.
Cogent's routes and latency are now better than some of the other "popular" providers, and their only drawback is the stigma associated with their name!

Are they perfect? No...
Is any carrier perfect? No...

That's why you go with a provider who runs BGP4... that way if a specific route does happen to have an issue, your provider can route around it...

other than spreading the impression that cogent is ok :)

And I agree with you, cogent is ok for cheap bandwidth as long as you
don't care about your site's reachability.

Wasn't Congent having a big problem back in October/November of '05? Come to think about it wasn't there a day where Cogent was having issues about a month ago? Not being sarcastic, this is a serious question.

Forgive me but I have to agree that you have every reason to be biased, but i will take into account what you say.

What other providers do you have?
