I'm staying at Monte Carlo, nice place... and it's not terrible to take a cab to and from the hotel to the other hotel... I am sure I have plenty of people who'd let me crash in their room anyways, as I'd extend the same courtesy..

Thats a good question it seems to only be good for the big guys and program owners. Whats the point of small time webmasters going other then getting drunk on a sponsors dime?

Yes it is,

Stay at the Wilshire Grand in downtown LA.

It's just a short walk to the pool and show area.
