Why are Americans such conspiracy nuts?

According to many Americans...

...the moon landing never happened.
...the pharmaceutical industry is deliberately preventing cures for diseases from being found.
...the oil industry is hiding all sorts of cheap, environmentally friendly energy.
...the Illuminati exist.
...nearly every election is rigged.
...UFOs fly around, abduct people, kill cows and have a secret deal with the government.

I know that there are also quite a few sensible Americans, but the percentage of conspiracy theorists among Americans seems to be much, much greater than it is among people in other places.

Can someone explain this? Did the American government put lsd in the drinking water supplies to keep the people paranoid or something?

StickyGreen 07-07-2006 05:38 PM

cuz tinfoil hats are stylish these days, they're blingin'...

Penthouse Tony 07-07-2006 05:39 PM

"...UFOs fly around, abduct people, kill cows and have a secret deal with the government."

WTF! Why didn't anyone tell me?

studiocritic 07-07-2006 05:44 PM

maybe more americans have access to electric and the internet, and the wealth+freetime to conspire?

After Shock Media 07-07-2006 05:44 PM

Cause in the past the Government did do some fucked up shit like drugging people, getting people sick, covering stuff up with lies because it was needed, and so forth. So naturally everything is looked at with skepticism.

ProducerCashDave 07-07-2006 05:45 PM

But the video they showed on the moon landing showed the American flag waving around, in theory with no gravity, the flag doesnt wave around, so the video they showed is bs

ClubAdultDesign 07-07-2006 05:47 PM

I wouldn't doubt the following...
Code:

...the moon landing never happened.
...the Illuminati exist.
...nearly every election is rigged.

The moon has gravity, it just has no atmosphere.
Also solar winds do exist.
Then the simple issue of inserting the flag could of caused movement.

ClubAdultDesign 07-07-2006 05:48 PM

you're all familar with scott stevens from weatherwars.info i'm sure.

here's a quote from an email he sent me a couple days ago

The paranoia does seem to be more common here in the States and likely of artificial origins.

First, the flag was made to look like it was waving by the use of a rod across the top of the flag to hold it out horizontally. This was well documented at the time of the landings and is often cause of a hoaxers claims. Second, when an astronaut adjusts the flag, it will wobble around first while the astronaut is adjusting it and then for a few moments afterwards as the imparted momentum damps out. Third, the flag definitely waved in the breeze of the rocket exhaust when the LM ascent stage lifted off the moon carrying the crew back home.

(and yes, I googled it)

Hell.. anything is possible PW :1orglaugh

When stuff may not be "quite transparent" it leaves open all kinds of speculation and human nature is inclined to go there.

Always remember a muttering from one person in a kinda off-guard moment. It went like this... "I don't think any human was ever mean't to witness things like that". Asked WTF they were referring to - thought it was something to do with crime and asked, "You mean criminal?". Reply, "Hell no, the government - criminal does not come near that level." It was not my biz and not my right to know - and sure would not get any further detail - so conversation changed.

Yup, curtesy of nature, flys, gasses, and other simple causes. Though aliens eating cows asses sounds better.

Doctor Dre 07-07-2006 06:12 PM

Because there is a lot more money going on the circles of the american gov then any other country in the world... so if somebody is going to do a conspiracy, this should be the right place to start.

J. Falcon 07-07-2006 06:14 PM

Be these theories true or not, Hollywood has definately helped stir the pot.

marumari 07-07-2006 06:17 PM

flys? i didnt know flys were metallic and saucer shaped.. ive heard the swamp gas theory also and i just dont think that it cuts the mustard.

Dude the fed's are small fry's.. The Men in black are going to zap a few fools with the ray gun to make them forget this was ever here. Hell that's probably why the GFY search function doesn't work because the MIB zapped the hard drive..

So...why is gfy suddenly doing double posts???? I think there's a conspiracy by the government to confuse porn webmasters into believing, umm....hmm...okay, I got nothing...I'm no good at these conspiracy things.

Pleasurepays 07-07-2006 07:28 PM

300,000,000 people in one country wired to the world with too much access to information. being in the electronic/information age with every idiot suddenly having every idiot with their finger on the pulse of every other idiot is not a good thing.

i doubt that statistically there is anything abnormal about the % of conspiracy clowns as a total % of population. its just that... well.... some inbred fuck in UncleDad, Louisianna with an opinion is just a good news story and they seem to get their share of the spotlight.

E$_manager 07-07-2006 08:09 PM

there are still normal ppl... i hope so.

Drake 07-07-2006 08:20 PM

We have a more plural and arguably free society, and the conpiracy nuts are a by-product of that. As somebody else said, it's part of marketing too and Americans have mediums like Hollywood that can be used for such purposes.

DaddyHalbucks 07-07-2006 08:32 PM

Because it's too easy in the USA to watch TV, drink beer, eat chips, and watch your tummy grow fat.

Your weiner gets limp and doesn't work, and you become a couch potato with nothing better to do than dream up absolutely inane theories and share them with other potatos. That qualifies as excitement for many spuds.

Conspiracy theories are the stuff of losers.
