SprintPCS cell phones are capable of being a modem for a laptop, all you need is a sprint phone with wireless web capabilities and the jack that plugs the phone up to the computer.
It's slow similiar to a 28k modem and it eats your minutes.

sprint pcs also has a wireless web modem. its about $250 and you plug it into your computer and its just like dialup (mabye a little slower). with the wireless web modem it uses the minutes off your plan and you can still use your phone. what i would do for this is get one of the sprint plans for like 5,000 night and weekend minutes and only use the internet at night.

Check out AT&T they just launched a 3g network... You can now get an ericcson phone with GPRS which is about 128k, and bluetooth. You of course need an IR or bluetooth interface for your notebook.

I have one and are still trying to figure out the settings for it, but it should work :)

Also have the sprint modem card, its slow as hell but works..

Ahh....and there's the problem... connectivity. With the GSM networks right now.. it sucks.. alot worse then TDMA. I have one of the Nokia 8390s. Greatest thing going for local and large towns.. sucks when you get out of range of the cell towers.

I did a mess of looking last summer when I was trying to plan an Alaska tour. Found that at that time a Sat phone would only get me about 9600 so I bagged it. PK *has* to update daily therefore has to stay connected.

I've told people that that's how they'll know I'm dead... when the site hasn't updated in 24 hours.

gotcha pk

i use to have an 8890 but the reception was terrible, they are suppose to work anywhere in the world sure, but the quality sux :)

I think At&t charges per megabyte which sucks ass. Something like $200 per 200mb's. Not good if you have to check out a ton of images like we do.

Check out Verizons new Express Network which has the fastest of all the proposed speeds "bursting up to 144kbs" http://www.verizonwireless.com/expre...ork/index.html

I think I am close to trying the Verizon service. I've been on the road for the past week and I would love to have that right now instead of having race back to the hotel or Kinko's to check stuff.

Just so you other road warriors know (if you didn't already) you can use Kinko's ethernet ports free of charge if you bring your own laptop & you can always count on The Wyndam hotels to have ethernet ports in all the rooms and some lobbys ($9.95)
