I just upgraded an out of date Red Hat box, to the new distro.

I am major impressed.

You strike me is a Linspire user.

I've been a Ubuntu loyalist since Breezy Badger ...

Very nice distro indeed, and it keeps getting better! :pimp

Yes... has a pkgtool system kind of like freebsd, checkinstall for making your own packages and various different third party tools for updating. It's the ultimate distro for setting up high performance secure servers quickly and easily. :thumbsup

I'm a debian fan, but I can respect your devotion... I've tried to debate the merits witha slackware fan in the past.. it always ends in a standstill... Slackware was a decent distro last time I used it. With package management, its probably damn good.

I was using for Ubuntu for most of this year, and I hae to admit I enjoyed it. It's a very useful distribution for sure. I'm on XP again now, due to some verious hardware issues and convenience, but I'll probably setup a new Ubuntu box soon.

Does it have a package manager similar to the debian or the macosx Fink package manager?

webcrawler 07-08-2006 12:59 AM

I just upgraded from Fedora 4 to 5 and works perfectly. You might want to check it out as well.

mrkris 07-08-2006 11:29 AM

I use Xubuntu (XFCE) because Ubuntu uses gnome which is a bloated memory hog.

LittleSassy 07-08-2006 12:24 PM

been using Ubuntu for three months now. So far im satisfied with it :thumbsup

AsianDivaGirlsWebDude 07-08-2006 12:30 PM

I am not familiar with those package managers.

The one it does have is very impressive. Just check the new updates task, or do an add programs task, click, click, and the install does its thing.

:thumbsup

About every 6 months there is a new distro people masturbate over. The whole package manager thing isn't anything new. Gentoo Linux has had portage for years and years. FreeBSD has had Ports for longer than that. Anything beats windows though.

It's Debian with lots of bells and whistles, so yeah - just apt-get like you're used to.
