An examination of Independence Day... from a Brit.

Happy (almost) Independence Day everybody!

Being an inquisitive sort, I Googled "Independence Day", just to clarify what we're supposed to be celebrating independence from... Not the British I hope! :winkwink:

Here are a few explanations that I found.

Independence Day
  • Independence Day (or ID4) is an American science fiction movie about an attempted alien takeover of Earth. The movie features several scenes of major landmarks being destroyed by the aliens, such as the First Interstate World Center, the Empire State Building, the White House, Big Ben, the Statue of Liberty, the Saint Basil's Cathedral and the Eiffel Tower.
  • On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence from Britain and Democracy was born. Every day thousands leave their homeland to come to the "land of the free and the home of the brave" so they can begin their American Dream.
  • Independence Day is commonly associated with parades, barbecues, picnics, baseball games, and various other public and private events celebrating the history, government, and traditions of the U.S. Fireworks have been associated with the Fourth of July since 1777.
  • A national holiday, invented for the benefit of popcorn and peanut promoters; tin horn and toy-balloon vendors; lemonade chemists; dealers in explosives; physicians and surgeons. A grand chance for the citizen-soldier to hear the roar of battle, smell powder, shoot the neighbor's cat, and lose a night's rest--or a finger.

This sounds a lot like Guy Fawkes Day.
That's a holiday we have in Britain where we have lots of fireworks and barbeques... and then we burn an effigy of this fellow (Guy) on top of a giant bonfire... because he committed treason. :winkwink:

Have a GREAT July 4th everybody... and please be safe! :thumbsup

Americans WERE British in 1776, so ID is basically Guy Fawkes borrowed and slightly modified.
