preventing kids from accessing porn on C:?

I just recieved this question from a member:

"when I download movies onto my harddrive can i prevent my kids from getting access to it "

I donŽt know what to respond? :
Is it possiple to password protect a folder in windows? I know if itŽs brainy kids, then there is always a way to the goodies...but for the little fragile no-tech ones?

Regards
Nick

Just tell the customer to make the folder with porn a hidden one and then to turn off view hidden folders on his folder options tab.

This is the first thing i could find.

Lock and Protect v1.12 - Folder Locker for Win32
http://sac-ftp.externet.hu/security7.html

I haven't used it, but i am assuming you can lock folders with it.

Hope that helps!

or rename the files to .dat and label the directory totally off. total pain in the ass though, cant he just burn them to cd?

thanks for the replies, I think the customer is very non-tech so iŽll need a pretty easy way to do it, iŽll take a look at that Lock and protect app. thanks :)

Making the file/folder hidden is about as easy as it gets and it doesn't cost anything. :2 cents:

YYS: yeah I agree, it just wonŽt make sense to this AOL newbie..hehe

We don't know how old and/or computer literate these kids are. If they're the typical teenage kids (more computer literate than their parents), hidden files and folders can be discovered. I think hiding them deep in the Windows directory renamed with some non-executable file extension might work.

More importantly (and dissatisfactory, I'm sure), I think the guy should decide what's more important: his kids' welfare or having a porn movie on his hard drive.

That's a good point indeed.

yeah.. it would be tragic for a child to see a naked person.. i can't imagine how badly it would affect their welfare.. they could probably sue when they're older for emotional damage :)

bhutocracy 06-03-2002 12:03 AM

magic folders is a great app BTW

Shoplifter 06-03-2002 02:31 AM

Windows XP Pro will do this... You can put Unix style permissions on directories. When your kids log in with their ID's they will never see them.

salsbury 06-03-2002 08:34 AM

drag, drop onto CD burner app, burn away, lock CD in bank vault. :)

Amputate Your Head 06-03-2002 08:59 AM

run an encryption proggy on them like F-Secure or something..... problem solved, and you won't have to worry about them accidentally finding some hidden folder bullshit.

sexyclicks 06-03-2002 09:06 AM

I use Win2000 and my little brother logs in with a DIFFERENT Username.
That will do it

Zyber 06-03-2002 10:16 AM

Create a encrypted disk with PGP or similar.

Hidding the porn is not a secure way. It does not take many seconds to hit the F3 key and search for *.mpg, *.jpg etc

Every geek can do that :thumbsup :2 cents:

True, but then we would all be out of business.

Someone posted the best idea possible, so I'd just like to revisit it.. Zip it up, then rename the .ZIP something like .DAT and move it into like windows/system.. unless your kid is REALLY smart and searches for large files to explore, you'll be safe. Why not buy a CD-burner and keep it all offline?

payrollpete 06-03-2002 12:19 PM

i say just get a couple imacs for the kids rooms :)

payrollpete 06-03-2002 12:20 PM

or just non-brand comps

u can build them for $300 - $500 a pop, so cheap now

Scootermuze 06-03-2002 03:05 PM

Just rename the file and extension til you're ready to view it, then rename it back...

Fletch XXX 06-03-2002 03:13 PM

Overlooking the most obvious.

Windows is set up for Log In users and he can dictate where or what each user can do am I wrong?

I personally dont use this feature but I know you can set up user log ins and access. With a Mac as well. In addition to pasword protecting the folder which would be the easiest me thinks.
