how to track someone down ( find his phone number )

Most states have online systems where you can search criminal cases, which show even traffic violations. If he has a really unique name you could maybe find some info on him that way. There was a site I knew of that had all the states's public records searches listed, but I can't seem to find it. It's harder with just a name. If you have his phone number already it would be simple to find his address even if his phone number was private or a cell phone. I had to track someone down based on their phone number once and I first called the cell phone company he used. They told me there was a password on the accound and unless I knew it they couldn't speak with me. The next thing I did is call local pizza places based on his area code and prefix. The first thing they ask you for when you place an order for delivery is your phone number. I gave them his phone number and they read me back the address they would deliver to. i wrote it down and found him.
