football is by far the largest sport in the world and no other sports do even come close. It is estimated that over 2 billion people watched the opening game in the world cup compared to only 133 million people watching the 2006 superbowl. The world cup final is still a week away...
In several Middle East countries, this will be the first World Cup that most football fans will not be able to watch free on national television channels. Many Arab governments have taken steps to ensure that their poorer citizens still have access to World Cup matches. In Morocco, King Mohammed VI has intervened personally to make sure the games are made available on state television. In Egypt and Jordan, the authorities are arranging for large communal TV screens to be set up in public places. In Africa's poorest countries, national budgets do not stretch far enough to pay for TV access, BBC correspondents note. But many fans will be able to watch the games on satellite TV in cafes and restaurants instead. Football means so much to so many people all over the globe and in somalia there have been riots over the islam football ban... |

Its madly popular in Argentina, but I wouldnt call that a third world country. And The United States hardly has real money or real food. Both of which are pretty damn bad.

Personally I prefer FOOTBALL, no not the "American version", the way it should be played. Best sport in the world next to alpine skiing. :thumbsup |
It's a pretty cheap sport to play, you don't need equipment at all..don't know why it's so popular..bores the hell out of me
|
You got a lot to learn if you think Western Europe is full of third world countries. Idiot, I read many of your posts and usually care less about the crap you say. But this is probably the dumbest thing you ever said.. or was it selling your company that no one wants.

Why do poor kids in Harlem play B-Ball?
|
Because a soccer ball is ... 5 bucks in thoses countries.
Hockey equipement = 1000 bucks |
bump for drama
|
stupid thread...
|
I prefer hockey over soccer, basically the same game, but 10x faster pace....
|
and pimpdog is right, in the whole game you can count the number of scoring opportunities on one hand, the rest of the game is just kicking around back and forth in midfield... perhaps 10 mins of the whole game is exciting and fun to watch...
|
I'd say it's pretty popular in the UK, Canada, Germany & scandanavian countries...
Those I'd not chunk into the 3rd world category... . However, I have to agree with the general sentiment as woj just wrapped it up pretty nicely above ^^^. They need to throw in more fights like Hockey at least...seriously. |
Just started watching Footbal this year and liking it a lot. The games are low scoring, but the anticipation and worldwide excitment is what makes it a great game.
|
never be soccer here....

Might never be big on the TV, but there is a world away from the box. But if we stopped the game every 5 minutes for the adverts then it would be more on the TV in the US. My nephews play soccer in CA and the local parks are full of soccer pitches, how that carries through to TV audiences in the future is anyones guess. Anyone got figures on what games kids play these days in US schools? |
1) It's called FOOTBALL
2) It's not just 3rd world countries... It's the rest of the world. |
fuck soccer, boxing all the way!
|
Of course Football is the World's most popular game. It's cheap, even the poor can afford to play it. Any empty space including grass, gravel or anything else can have a goal marked with just about anything. 22 People can now play a sport, for the cost of a single ball.
You can not say this is true of almost any other sport. Basketball is close, but requires a hard court and baskets. However, once this is established in a community, again only a ball is needed. This explains the popularity in poor American hoods. Football may well be a good game, but claiming it's the "best" because it's the most popular is sort of misleading. It's kind of like saying white rice is "better" than roast beef, because more people eat it as a daily staple. |
in india they play cricket with severed legs and rats

I watched football this year and it's not bad. Like somebody said, it's just a slower paced version of hockey. |

Soccer is mastered by Africans and South Americans, Western Europeans and Japanese just add the money, and make it a business. |
The fundamental problem with football is the low scoring. After 120 minutes of kicking the ball around fruitlessly they goto penalty kicks... This isn't a rare occurence either. Penalty kicks aren't a very fair way to decide the outcome of a game. A lot of it is just luck. They need to redo the rules so their is an average of around 5 points a game or so. So its less of a luck based system. Some ideas I had to increase scoring so the best team won instead of the luckier team:
1. Reduce the size of the field and perhaps the amount of players. Too big and too many people and it becomes a defensive stalemate. Try playing 11 vs. 11 b-ball sometime. 2. Over and back rule 3. Time limit getting it accross the mid line 4. Eliminate offsides. Sure there would be cherry picking but why are you not guarding somebody? I have seen several goals taken back due to this and several goals that seemed to certainly be offsides allowed. I think it lets officiating decide the outcome of a game. |

Football or as you call it Soccer isn't cheap to watch. In the UK - oh and I wouldn't say this is a third world country - the average season ticket to watch your club is around $1500. Thats for basic seats. You then have the strips to pay for, transport to the games, away game tickets, European tickets, flights, hotels etc
The list goes on and on. I know Basketball and Baseball probably costs more, but its by far a cheap sport to follow. |
Trey will never stop pulling your leg and I thought that everyone would know better by now... but you still take on the challenge and here we go with another drama.
You can't win against a guy who's doing it for the fun because he's not taking it seriously and you are :winkwink: Oh, I forgot... 50 soccer... eh... football games :1orglaugh |
