Good HDD sales, who makes the best these days?

I've read good things about Seagate. 5 year warranty when most drives are only 1 year.

OfficeMax has a Seagate Ultra ATA/100 160gb for $60

CircuitCity has a Seagate Ultra ATA/100 300gb for $90 after rebates

What about Maxtor? Seagate bought them, but is the quality the same?

CompUSA has a Maxtor SATA/150 250gb for $60 after rebates

You seem to be placing a fair emphasis on pricing when your data is probably worth a hell of a lot more :2 cents: :winkwink:

WesternDigital isn't cheap, but there are concerns over their quality. So you don't always get what you pay for.

Thus the purpose of this thread. I'd like to know if Maxtor is safe. I read that they may not handle heat as well as others. Right now my ambient temp is at 33 C / 91.4 F. Is that alright for them?

Modern HDs can run quite hot (sometimes too hot to touch), so I would look at some sort of supplementary cooling. I have a caddy that fits into a couple of 5 1/2" bays which has a fan at the front of it. That's usually all it takes to keep the shell cool to the touch.
