What is with this industry and people just making up job titles to sound important?
wtf? i'm not directing this at anyone in particular but i've noticed that alot of people in this industry dont know shit about business titles. someone gets hired by a company to deal with affiliates and all of a sudden they are the "Affiliate Manager". you have to have people under you to manage before you can be a damn manager. someone else gets hired and they are the "Director" of something or other. News flash, in order to be a Director of anything you have to be elected or appointed to the "Board of Directors". most of these damn companies dont even have a damn board, so how can you be a director. damn people, come on now.

Soulswagon - Director of Affiliate Managers |
I still remember when I was working for a company and I wanted my title to be Associate Support Specialist so I could be an ASS :) They didn't go for that....
If you read my incorporation papers, I'm a president, vice-president and secretary. I think that means I have to give myself a gift on secretary's day. When WEG asked me what I wanted to be titled, I said "Affiliate Support". I figured that was what I did :) |

a. thats my point, a manager is someone that is in charge of other people so unless they are managing the employees under them, you cant call them a manager. or b. so if the entry level people are calling themselves Managers, who is the person that you hire to manage them? |
Oh, seems GA changed it - I'm now the CEO, CFO and Secretary :)
|
It's not just this industry. My title at work now is IT Coordinator (no, I didn't come up with that). My supervisor is the VP of Sales & Marketing... how does that happen?? But anyway, I've went through many titles that he made up, my favorite being Web Director. I don't know where he gets this stuff.

Yeah there is allot of "CEO'S" here operating out of there office(bedroom computer).:1orglaugh :1orglaugh :1orglaugh

Isn't an affiliate manager and affiliate support two different things? Sometimes they do both plus sales too.
I think an "affiliate manager" would be the main affiliate support person who would also be contributing to the hiring and management of all affiliate program related staff and features. Probably doing sales too and possibly traffic management. Some programs are so large though that there are different people who contribute to different parts of that. |
I'm an online marketer... :2 cents:!!

Grunts -> Manager -> Director -> VP -> CEO -> Board |
In most companies, whomever is online is who does whatever needs to be done ;)

In most old-line mainstream companies managers are actually a step below directors so that gives no indication of how many people, if any, that title is over. So, if we are to take the title literally, it would seem Affilliate manager does just that, MANAGES AFFILLIATES. Nothing more, nothing less.
I would imagine the Director of Marketing, or since the headcount at these companies isn't really that big, the VP of Marketing would be the one doing the hiring and firing of Affilliate managers. See Captain Tender Thighs for an example of this. At the end of the day this is a new industry you can call yourself whatever the fuck you want. |
