Meta tags completely dead??

Someone just told me that all major search engines (google, yahoo, msn etc..) are completely ignoring "meta name="Keywords" tag

I know that keywords are almost worthless (its not like in 1996), but I didn't know that they are completely ignored by SE's, and Google never supported keywords at all.

And this happened like year 2000 already and I'm still thinking which keywords to add when building new site :Oh crap :helpme

gooddomains 06-28-2006 06:54 AM

yes, they are gone to shit

fallenmuffin 06-28-2006 06:55 AM

Yeah, google has been ignorning them for a long time now. Yahoo/MSN ect started doing it after google. However the smaller guys still use them. So its not completely pointless but not really worth the time.

I still do them though because it takes me about 30 seconds and I figure it can't hurt.

Sarah_Jayne 06-28-2006 10:22 AM

naw I just have templates set up that I change the words on and slot in spot

SmokeyTheBear 06-28-2006 10:46 AM

Socks 06-28-2006 10:49 AM

hah smokey is your flag geo-centric too?

Linkster 06-28-2006 12:04 PM

Yahoo and MSN most definitely DO use them - havent seen Google respond to them but it wouldnt surprise me if they go back to it eventually

gooddomains 06-28-2006 12:08 PM

The have been abused over and over again, that's why they got dumped by the SE

Shocking 06-28-2006 12:14 PM

Its become second nature around here, a site without meta tags is a little naked to me.

candyflip 06-28-2006 01:02 PM

I still add them out of habit. Like Sarah, I figure it can't hurt.

AtlantisCash 06-28-2006 01:07 PM

Google, Yahoo & MS Really shitting Sometimes.

bdld 06-28-2006 01:21 PM

they may only be used if your page is mostly comprised of images and very little, if any, text.

BobG 06-28-2006 01:23 PM

waiting for........ "there's no money in SEO post"

Cash 06-28-2006 02:34 PM

I don't use them anylonger ... The description meta tag is however used now by Google as well.

ready lube 06-28-2006 02:36 PM

They seem to work great from what I hear and why not use them sine like everyone has said, it takes no more then a few miin.'s to do.

jrap 06-28-2006 02:47 PM

You should still make relevent meta tags, just don't rely on them getting your site ranked #1 (or #10 for that matter)

Linkster 06-28-2006 03:27 PM

Cash - the description tag has always been used by Google - its especially useful if they dont find any text on the page - thats what they use for the snippet in the SERPs - great way to make extra sales :)

goldrush 06-28-2006 07:30 PM

It's good web usability to use them anyway.

You never know when things are going to change again, might as well have them in place for when it happens.

MaddCaz 06-28-2006 09:34 PM
