How did you get started in the adult biz?

I'm just starting out, so it would be neat to know how others have started their business. What's the way to go? Which way did you go?

I have several ideas on how one could start:

1) Just buying traffic and sending it to affiliate program links. (easy to start, but it costs a lot and besides the money, I have nothing to show for it - no own site, no residual income)

Which conversion rates can one expect on different traffic? I know, it depends, but some rough numbers would be nice.

2) Starting a TGP (one with movies, are they called MGPs?) and buy traffic and try some of these link exchange things

3) starting my own paysite (way beyond my capabilities!!! Probably a lousy way to start as a complete newbie)

4) starting a TGP and doing SEO (I don't know anything about SEO!)

Is this list even remotely complete? Are there other ways to make money in the adult world? As I said, I'm new to all this. Would be nice to get some tips.

And it would be cool to know how some of you actually got started.

martinsc 06-28-2006 02:41 AM

i started with a fake tgp and tried some gallery submitting.
for now i am trying to get into SEO

scottybuzz 06-28-2006 03:08 AM

dont do steps 1 and 3, thats all i will say, as i am still new to this industry. but I know not to do that.

godisdead 06-28-2006 03:13 AM

Okay, so that means I should start a TGP. Or are there other options I don't know?

ClearHead 06-28-2006 04:04 AM

i get traffic only from search engines and it works very well.
so, learn all about SEO - it's my advice.

godisdead 06-28-2006 04:06 AM

where did you learn it? And how long did it take? How much traffic do you get?

mfps 06-28-2006 04:07 AM

start a blog.

theres no money in tgp.

Don't do step 3? Hmm, I understand that your own paysite might be out of your reach right now but I don't think it's bad way to start. You could have this as a long term goal. That's exactly what I did and several other successful people I know.

I mean, all the affiliate and referral shit, TGPs, and shoveling the same old pro porn around and around is OK, but in the end everybody is munching off of the few people with paypages and unique content.

Paysite owners with unique content are the leading edge in this biz. If nobody has paypages nobody can join, no affiliate program will spit out a dime, and all the TPGs, traffic trading, and "get paid per click" programs are for shit.

My Q is, if you start something, why not start on top?

testpie 06-28-2006 11:39 AM

I started under the disillusion of money and riches. Personally, i'd say you should experiment - no one thing will suit everybody or every business, otherwise everyone would sucessfully be doing that thing.

As they say, "your mileage may vary".

These are good points, Jenny.

But if you just start our and don't have the money to pay for original pornsite content, you just can't do that. If I want to work in this biz, a paysite will be my final goal but starting with it is just a bit out of my league right now. I'd rather get a feeling for how this business works first - before I revolutionize it. :thumbsup

So you got started with a paysite? Wow. Impressive!

How did you get started in the adult biz?

OMG ....

I Just wanted to get some porn and saw a link " webmasters click here "
Hell, did i know it was not meant for me..... @nyway, after reading it, i decided to provide porn instead of using it. This was 9 years ago....

( thanks Streamray and others, now im addicted to you guys )

Marky333 07-01-2006 10:01 AM

Hehe, I started into porn several years ago when saw a friend doing it and I liked it .... I mean who doesn't like porn? Now I'm using and viewing it ... but my main goal is the programming - porn doesn't pay as good as the scripts ;)

Start a blog or free site, it's the easy way to start and get you going while you learn, just starting a tpg or something I think can be a little overwhelming if you dont how how the basics truely work and terms are

Thanks. Blogging was something I didn't even know. I hadn't considered that. mfps said so, too. Hm. I guess I'll look into it. :thumbsup

Where do I get a free porn blog? I'm looking for something like blogger only for adult sites. Is there something like that?
Or can someone recommend some free blog software one can use on your own webspace.

Thanks!

twan 07-07-2006 07:07 AM

I started Thumblogger and rolled into adult biz with a couple bumps here and there :)

If you have your own webspace you can download and install wordpress.
Or go the easy way with thumblogger (http://www.thumblogger.com) or free hosted wordpress at sensualwriter (http://www.sensualwriter.com).

Then it looks like you are doing the right thing by reading around here. You and I are in the same boat, maybe for different reasons but you have the right idea, learn.

I wouldnt worry yet about where to start, but focus on all the different aspects of the industy; the site, design, traffic, content, upkeep, costs, getting new material, what can you do that will be better then the next guy, affiliate programs, etc...

Thats where to start, then step 2 is create you identy, 3 - make some money.

Thats my current game plan.
Best Luck to you.

I hope I didnt come across poorly, i am not intending to sound like a dickhead.
