I got a call from the NC revenue service tonight

I got a call tonight about 7pm from the North Carolina revenue service saying in 2001 I under paid my NC taxes by $5400. She couldn't tell me what the mistake was or anything, but was wanting me to pay it right then. She said I couldn't talk to an auditor to find out anything till tomorrow because the office was closed and gave me a number to call in the morning. Sounds a little fishy to me. :disgust What do you think?

TurboAngel 06-27-2006 08:38 PM

I think you better call in the AM and talk to someone.

I didn't get the call till 7pm tonight. I can't do anything till the morning.

I wouldn't consider anything from a government agency as binding until a statement arrived in the mail. If they want money, tell them to send you a letter about it.

Why would your state offices be closed on a wednesday that is not a federal holiday, and yet be open at 7PM?

Also $5400 is ALOT to have to pay for state taxes, assuming you're not bordering on millionaire status...

This sounds like a scam to me. G/L

although, when you google the number the only result is a gov website labeling that number as a tax refund info line. id just call one of the numbers on that first url.

I'm with WG on this one.
I've never received telephone communication from any government or tax collection entity.
Everything is done via U.S. Mail.

BLish 06-27-2006 09:20 PM

yep.. this definitely sounds like a scam. be very careful!

Very true! If they have my home phone number in Florida, how could they not have my home address? It just bugs the shit out of me that I can't check on it till tomorrow. The timing of the call was just total bullshit too!

Thanks! I hope your right and it is a scam! $5,400 is what I "supposedly" under paid that year!!! :winkwink:

Vitasoy 06-27-2006 11:03 PM

Sounds like a scam to me.

AmeliaG 06-27-2006 11:05 PM

While I don't hope that people are scammers, I do hope there is some error and you don't owe that. That would be quite an oversight on NC state taxes, unless maybe there are a lot of penalties built in.

Peaches 06-27-2006 11:07 PM

I'd look up the number for the NC Dept of Revenue and call THAT number.

Exactly, a phone call is a convenience to notify you at most, there always will be a formal notification by US Mail. Anyone who pressures you to pay or respond without it is likely a scam.

They don't call they send out mail. They don't want you to pay they want the interest to build up and up and up and up

fatal attraction 06-27-2006 11:14 PM

Wow, so many good friends responding to this I don't know who to quote! haha. Thanks so much everyone for the input on this!!!! It wouldn't have bothered me so much if I could have checked it out right away, but the more I thought about it....the more it worried me!!!
