problems with toshiba laptops?

Hey....

for anyone who knows much about Toshiba laptops...i purchased my 1st toshiba laptop(it has a celeron chip) in December 05...the last week it has been running hot, the keys i can feel are hot along with the part where i rest my hands and the trackpad. the fan is turning on and i always feel the hot air coming out the side....

is this a characteristic of this laptop maker? support wants me to send them the laptop for 5 to 10 biz days so i said no thanks...

any comments/suggestions would be appreciated...thanks!

no thats not normal - isnt there a util to check chip temp? cause long ago they had issues but nowadays Im sure theyre as good as any other brand

SilentKnight 06-27-2006 07:59 AM

I run a Toshiba satelite laptop with the celeron here and haven't had similiar problems (bought it roughly the same time as yours). And I run it almost all day and night long.

Using toshiba for a few years now, no problems with it :) Although the air coming out of it is pretty hot, it doesn't feel like a problem.

Dude I had a toshiba and it blew up after 3 months. Then sent it in, got it back and it blew up again. I smashed it into a wall and got an HP.

I have a similar laptop (celeron chip as well) I bought in jan, the touchpad gets incredibly hot to the touch. The keys don't get hot, but the touchpad feels as though it's cooking all the IC boards underneath. No problems with it yet other than the incredibly temperature of the touchpad... I had to start using a mouse with the thing lol.

I also own Toshiba Satellite Celeron chip and no problems...

called customer support again and the guy told me that there is no problems with it since it has not froze up on me, has not shut down, or burnt itself out by now in the week i have noticed this. he told me that it is just running hot from over use and days of being used everyday. I guess i will start using the mouse more....

will most likely purchase a mac book pro soon anyways....and keep this for backup.

got this at circuit city for $499 including printer, router...added 1gig ram for $70

djroof 06-27-2006 09:16 AM

You can feel hot air from left side of laptop .... where there has some gates...

Why 06-27-2006 09:16 AM

HP make great gear.

Years ago I had the pleasure of trying out 4 of their M50 monitors before we got one that worked.

It is a serious problem with Toshiba A70's and A75's ........We have two ppl at the office running them. The fans on the bottom work like a vacuum, clog the fins on the heatsink and temps soar. If you push it one of two things will occur. Decreased performance or is will just shut down. There are Class Action law suits in regards to shutting down due to static discharge and overheating
It is a very very poor design. Google toshiba overheat. Some intersting reads

Mine kept overheating and eventually it was crashing all the time. Only one year old. I just replaced it with an HP.

wyldblyss 06-27-2006 10:15 AM

If there is a class action, I want in on it lol. Our Toshiba kept overheating and shutting down and eventually wouldn't turn on. It had a one year warranty on it, brought it in and they replaced the cpu and the logic assembly. Several months later, the exact same thing happened, once again, we brought it in and they replaced the cpu and the logic assembly. The warranty ran out and about a week after it did, it died again. In the one year we had it, it went through the original cpu and logic assembly and 2 replacements. The laptop is trash and unusable.

my friend had the big one 17 inch widescreen and it overheats all the time crashes. If you do a google search you will see tons of people with that the overheating problem its a design flaw.I would never buy a toshiba after seeing all her problems and how unresponsive they have been on a new laptop.

thanks for the info...surprised by the findings on google

I had 2 Toshiba laptops in the last 3 years. I am happy with them, but the heat might be a confort concern. (i leave my coffee cup there and it stays warm longer that way!)

Toshiba laptops have 2 or more different heat sink/fan design depending on your laptop model. Just google your model and you will run into sites showing how you can clean the dust on your heat sink/fan area.

Some designs are great, it never gets cloged. And some designes collect dust over time and that causes the heat.

make sure the fan isn't blocked... sometimes dust and crud can build up

Gabriel 06-27-2006 12:14 PM

Toshibas are notorious for running hot, when they overheat they just shut down. Try using a laptop cooler if its only a year old.

thanks, ordering a cooler right now..

Sparks 06-27-2006 12:30 PM

Mine runs hot, but it's never that bad. Good luck.

cookiekid 06-27-2006 12:32 PM

I was told my toshiba will eventually explode....

OG LennyT 06-27-2006 12:34 PM

I bought a Satellite last October, the hot air inside is vented out the left side of the laptop. (The fan cycles off and on depending on the inside temp.)

My guess is your fan is not working properly.

RRRED 06-27-2006 12:35 PM

toshibas are pieces of dog shit. I had to return 3 of them this winter.. by the time I had all my stuff loaded on them and got rolling, they'd die completely.

baddog 07-19-2006 02:22 PM

We are looking at the Toshiba tablet pc. Anyone have any input on them, or on any others?
