I would go for serendipity or wordpress for your own server.
They are both excellent blogging scripts.

xclusive 06-27-2006 04:15 AM

wordpress is the best overall

Mr.Right - Banned For Life 06-27-2006 04:17 AM

wordpress is fantastic. Very easy to use.

Brujah 06-27-2006 04:17 AM

It -really- depends on your needs. Wordpress is an easy 'catch-all' answer as it can apply to most bloggers needs.

gooddomains 06-27-2006 04:19 AM

Is Wordpress really the one blog script worthwile to use? Can't believe that noone came up with some kick ass commercial blog software.

Why would someone pay when they can get it for free. Theres no market. If your plan to use wordpress for commerical purposes they have a commerical license.

LiveDose 06-27-2006 04:26 AM

You should check out Wordpress. I'm sure if it was commercial and not gpl or freeware people would still pay for it. It is a great piece of software and the community support and ability to customize is amazing. All for free! What additional feature set are you looking for that you want to pay for?

The same reason why it's better to use vbulletin than phpBB

It's not about features, it's about support and people working fulltime on it.

BaldBishop 06-27-2006 04:48 AM

Wordpress

Check out Autoblogger Pro, it automates everything for you and optimizes it for SEO. Its a great piece of software!

What do you mean with apple and oranges? I had my fair share with both of them and the open source non commercial one just can not match the commercial version when it comes to security issues.

I mean its like comparing apples to oranges. phpBB sold out hardcore with their commerical licenses and left most of the development to third parties. Which somehow sparked with every 13 year old with a few hours to kill. However Wordpress is stil highly in development by the orginal creator(s) and is updated often. The creators of Wordpress also have a more _developed_ background, for lack of a better term, then those of phpBB.

So, like I said, apples and oranges.

Do you want a commercial blog script just for the sake of having a commercial blog script, or are there some requirements you're actually looking for?

You could check out www.pmachine.com for Exhibition Engine I believe it's called, and Firefox and The Onion among many others use Drupal.org for example. Really depends what specifically you're trying to accomplish, where Wordpress may not be a good match.

Thx for the info. That helpls to check out some other scripts besides Wordpress. I am not looking into spending money at any price, but sometimes commercial solutions are just the better option to go when you need to depend on it.

fris 06-27-2006 06:19 AM

i used to be against wordpress, but i have since installed it and integrated it on all my blogs, i love it, the plugins, plus i just do 20-30 posts at once and schedule them, and dont have to worry about anything for a month.

gooddomains 06-27-2006 06:25 AM

I now took a closer look at the software from pmachine, it is certainly a well structured commercial product. However hard to tell if it's worth the $250 they want for it.

Any more commentes are highly welcome

wordpress? :2 cents:

Brujah 07-02-2006 06:28 AM

I really liked Textpattern myself. I ended up not using it though, and opted for Drupal. I can't remember why. It might have been something with user permissions that I needed. I did enjoy using it though, and using Textile.

HorseShit 07-02-2006 06:31 AM

I don't favour anything until now, but there must be more solutions than one open source script
