My grandmother and older aunts told me that back in the day, the first thing the hospital did when you checked in to have a baby was give you an enema. I was born in the 70s and my mom said they had pretty much stopped it by then, but she knew some women her age who still got one.

That's why they require you to come in the hospital (as soon as possible)once you feel the first contraction so they can give you enema before the delivery begins. Or not to eat heavy meal if you know that it's your due date already.
