Anyone Moved from UK to SPAIN????

An exciting opportunity has arrose and I'm seriously contemplating moving myself and my family to spain. I would be deeply appreciative of any advice and / or informational help. Has anyone here made such a transition?

fetishblog 06-26-2006 09:40 AM

No, but a friend of mine moved from the US to Spain and he LOVES it. Him and his wife/girlfriend/whatever she is own a design firm in Barcelona(I believe). He keeps trying to get me to move over there too.

ServerGenius 06-26-2006 09:42 AM

I have lived in total for 6 years in Spain.....there's loads of british expats living
in Spain. :thumbsup

tgpmakers 06-26-2006 09:44 AM

Not Yet!!!!!!

If I move there, you should as well and we can develop a little webmaster community! It's happened very quickly so I'm totally lost as to were to start the process if, indeed, I go ahead with it. With it being in the EU it should be pretty easy for us. I think I could do with finding a UK-based service that will handle it all for a fee.

Hi :) Where do you live and could you recommend any service to handle the emigration?

cheekycherry 06-26-2006 09:46 AM

I'm really not sure why the average Brit would want to move there, other than the shitty weather in the UK.

There are nicer places in the world, but I'm going for business not entirely pleasure. If I could go anywhere it would be a tough choice betweem US, Canada, and Australia.

Bump for afternooners.

MassiveDollars - DonPaul 06-26-2006 01:35 PM

There are TONS of british people in Spain, I lived there for 2 years or so, and the brits are everywhere down there ;)

emjay 06-26-2006 01:48 PM

Much easier pace of life in Spain, great weather, and the cost of living is lower too!

Just make sure you have a phone line before you move there - Telefonica either very quick or it takes (literally) years to get phoneline. You have been warned!:pimp

Blah! You just call 1004 and order it. From any phone since you won't have one LOL. But that is 20x faster than ordering it in the Telefonica stores! Seriously. The wait is when you order it there - always use 1004 for everything. They even have an English speaking department.

Make sure you check out the downsides that you hear about like land grabs (Valencia region I believe). Also there was that corruption scandal recently on the Costa Del Sol that has cocked up some expats.

Other than that I would definitely go for it as those are not typical of your normal relocation.

Kristian 06-26-2006 02:42 PM

Wow ... this is great! Thanks for the positive responses, folks! Can someone be kind enough to dumb down the emigration process for me or point me to a site? For instance, can I just go there, and apply for all the necessary papers, or should I do that in the UK? And, if I can just go there, and go get the papers, where do I go? Apologies for such stupid questions, but I havent the faintest idea of even where to start.

Kristian 06-26-2006 02:57 PM

For anyone interested ... this page and entire site are proving an excellent read. The emigration process is spelled out very well. http://www.idealspain.com/Pages/Info...ingToSpain.htm

I'm 99.99% sure of doing this now.

Kristian 06-26-2006 03:11 PM

I'm going to be buying a place out there, but obviously I can't do that until I'm out there. Can anyone point me to a site where I can look at long term rentals?

emjay 06-26-2006 03:45 PM

Try Rosy Donate. She runs the "Red Tape Consultancy" helping Expacts with Spanish formatilites. Her number is +34 922 795 528 or email [email protected]

I have not spoken to her for ages, good luck :-)

I hear, and maybe this is just a rumor, but I hear they don't speak English over there.

That sounds like a problem to me.

Eyes_Without_A_Face 06-26-2006 04:22 PM

I'm Portuguese and use to spend my hollidays in Spain. THEY DO KNOW HOW TO LIVE.

Make the move if you can.

Spanish sun instead of British rain. :thumbsup

What? Learn another language?

I'm A 'merican, I don't need to learn me no other languages. Everyone else should speak American in their 3rd world countries.

Kristian 06-26-2006 04:55 PM

My wife is fluent in Spanish, French and English.

Moved with my GF to Tenerife almost 7 years ago, still here and always will be! Now married with 2 kids and love the life.
The weather's better than the mainland and being part of the EU very easy to settle.

Hi emjay, nice meeting you last week...how's things?

She needs to work on her "Hey, Y'all" and "That's way cool!" but she's passable. :)

Sounds great and good to know. :)

watch out theres plenty of scammers in spain trying to sell you bogus lottery/flight tickets. Recently some couple got murdered cause they owned some large time-share business - certain gangster apparantly killed them (well hired people to do the dirty work) I would be very careful over there.

Thanks for the warning dude - I'll keep this in mind for sure.
