Let's put this to bed: Are There Too Many Surfers On This Board ?

It's a big topic lately. Everyone is tired of it, I know I am.

If you're just "starting out" please know there are a TON of boards out there with much more helpful and friendlier people who WANT to show others how to make money in adult.

I'm sure a paid membership isn't a solution, as it could mess with the advertising numbers.

We've seen GFY try to *slow it down* by limiting link and image posts until people reach 30 posts. We thank you for this!

But more needs to be done.

We have more mods now than we have in a while, and surprise! They're not going on psychopathic rampages :1orglaugh

What more can GFY (and it's community do) to stop the nonsense?

A suggestion would be to make it a new GFY rule that you can't participate in contests unless you've been registered for X amount.

As far as what YOU can do; take the link off your damn websites. You're not helping anything if you have a link to GFY (or any other webmaster board for that matter) on the pages frequented by surfers. *ahem*

:2 cents:

Thoughts pleeeeeeeease?

gooddomains 06-23-2006 08:57 AM

Too many surfers? Can't be. There are still some serious threads posted every day and it's all about fun, ain't it ?`

It's too bad the search function doesn't work past a year. I had a nick back in '02, 'entrpnr' that was banned during a psychotic breakdown of Amp. Was just gonna link it but it looks like I can't.

I've been around for a while bud.

And you were so nice in San Diego. :1orglaugh

And as an FYI there are a few people on here with regdates far beyond 04 who are doing nothing but trying to win shit in contests and fwap it to content.

fallenmuffin 06-23-2006 09:25 AM

Yes, way to many.

Pron Don 06-23-2006 09:31 AM

how do we know if someone is a surfer or not?

ugh, i wish they could just make the account sign up process harder, like make you give proof that you run a site or something

BobG 06-23-2006 09:32 AM

surfer here :-)

considering what they bring in in advertising dollars you think they could afford someone to check all the applications properly or something.

in the end it wont happen, gfy is always a battle. get used to it.

tranza 06-23-2006 09:39 AM

The surfers are voting no.....

:(

marketsmart 06-23-2006 09:54 AM

where do i sign up for all these contests i hear about?

i am here only for the fabulous gifts and prizes....

"surfs up dude"

pr0phet 06-23-2006 10:00 AM

one day someone real smart will buy a banner for a paysite....... they will soon retire. I bet that person wont vote against the surfers.

nestle 06-23-2006 11:08 AM

Well, they just added a few more mods to their team so I'm hoping they did that for a reason and not just for shits and giggles.

I have been a volunteer moderator at a pretty large mainstream forum (not as many posts as GFY but no contests either :winkwink: ), the forum is the largest one in its industry. One of the thing about a growing community is how the rules have to evolve to accomodate its growth. There's a certain point in a community's growth where "anything goes" type of rule can become more of a burden then not and inhibit proper growth. This is probably the reason why luv$ has to bring up such threads and rightfully so.

My personal suggestions for GFY:

I think there should be a separate contest forum and is only visible to people who have XX posts and/or have been registered for XX weeks.

Newly registered members can only post in the 'Webmaster Q & Fuckin' A' forum for X weeks and/or have XX VALID posts (not bullshit one-liner posts)... frankly because spammers and people who would register just for contests aren't that patient.

(The above two suggestions can be done with vb features and/or simple mods.)

People selling shit should post in the 'Sell and Buy Forum' and not in the 'Fucking Around & Program Discussion' - I see this happening all the time. Either merge the two forums together or give it a reason why there is a separate forum to post shit you have for sale. I know the reason why they post it in the right forum, because this forum is more popular.
(this one will involve moderators actually moderating.)

I don't think GFY is a bad resource for adult webmasters starting out. Being a webmaster is nothing new to me. However, I admit (hope I'm not lynched or stoned for saying this) that I'm a newbie adult webmaster; I've started out a few months back and I have learned a shitload of things from reading and searching and talking to people on ICQ from GFY that wasn't relevant at all to being a mainstream webmaster.

On the otherhand, I do consider GFY a bad resource for complete newbies that come in here to ask things like "what is ftp?" because I can only estimate 1 out of every 200 long-term GFY member will give the poor guy the answer he needs.

</rant> (not really finished with my thoughts but I ran out of time and gotta go... I'll be back.)

FYI, I remove my sig for all of my serious posts :thumbsup

MetaMan 06-23-2006 11:09 AM

i am just here for the free porn.

madawgz 06-23-2006 11:18 AM

maybe somehow, every new signup has to match records with the site's DNS to be reviewed...

if they dont have a site, any site... then they cant come here

G-Rotica 06-23-2006 11:22 AM

what about ex-web masters?

gdog 06-23-2006 11:58 AM

Surfers go to http://www.busty-amateurs2.com/busty-amateur-girls.html and see some hot San Diego amateurs with big boobs.

Webmasters ignore this post

Since I'm unaware of exactly how many surfers there are here on GFY, I'm not entirely qualified to say whether there's too many. I'm not denying there's a significant percentage, of course.

But speaking from the perspective of both a webmaster and producer, I don't mind the presence of surfers - I just don't appreciate the blatantly dumbass ones who come across as little more than imbeciles and fools. But those types exist on both sides of the spectrum.

GFY touts itself as a place 'where the industry meets'. Aren't surfers (some of which are undoubtedly paying members and supporters of our respective websites) part of the industry equation? Is their feedback and constructive input not of genuine value to webmasters and content producers?

It'll be argued that this is a 'webmaster only' forum, and not a place for surfers. Okay, fine. But I have to ask - what kind of a webmaster conducts business in a vacuum of feedback? How do you track trends? Or the preferences of your clientele?

I've been producing original content since 1995 and running paysites since 1999. We have a decade under our belts. And while I don't fool myself into thinking I know it all (lord knows I've likely forgotten more than I've learned over the years)...one thing I do know is that the more successful webmasters among us LISTEN to those who support their efforts...while acknowledging that our industry is a symbiotic relationship.

One wouldn't exist without the other.

Of course, the final say is up to the owners and admin of GFY - as to what direction they want the forum to go. I just don't see the benefits of making it totally exclusive.

My :2 cents:

Wiggles 06-23-2006 01:14 PM

impossible to find out, impossible to prove if they are or not.i think board is fine right now anyway.

I completely disagree with what you said

the surfers here are 16 year old kids ( like kak azn 1 year ago ) posting the most useless shit cause they are bored, and not a few selected experienced porn users giving their feedback to paysite owners or content producers

it is hard to verify someones age on here - but a good start would be adding only those who are referred by someone you know within the industry. This has got to stop - surfers pretending to work in the industry slamming and talking shit as though they making millions.

we need to call them out and if they can't provide proof of their employment or meaningfulness in the adult community.. ban them

I'm sure you're partly right, and I don't doubt there's a lot of bored youngsters wanting to schmooze with webmasters and whatnot. I can understand the allure. But I also tend to think your observation is rather based on generality.

anne 06-23-2006 01:36 PM

Yea I suspect that a lot of the dumb ass posts are from surfers. GRrrr

scottybuzz 06-23-2006 01:42 PM

Its getting quite out of hand around here to say the least. GFY is being flooded with surfers and non-sense posts, not to mention that most of those posts have no relation to the thread what so ever. Some type of measures need to be put in place here because it seems like theyre letting the "monkeys run wild"

I, myself, Haven't been around much for the plain fact that this isnt much of a webmaster board anymore. The day it turns back into one, is the day I will visit daily and give my contribution.

..And Im not even going to get into the SAME people who win the contests everytime. -cough- You know who you are. Same names show up every time.
Figures sponsors have been pushing the hell out of these p o s t contests. Why not have some contests were you've got to send sales? See how many stick around then.

ah please give me a break , i see more of the time "vets" posting more useless crap then anyone else

i haven't noticed any signs hanging on any of the nicks " i'm a webmaster and i'm a surfer"

pornguy 06-23-2006 06:18 PM

One of the few things that might help get rid of surfers, is to stop paying them for posting. Right now, any surfer can join, and make a few whitty comments, and sell his sig for 50$. then make a fool out of himslef, and get lots of views. so the next month he makes more, and it snow balls. the thing is, he tells a friends.

So make the sig selling for people that have been posting here for a year or more. by that time most have either given up, and left, or started a site.

Spunky 06-23-2006 06:20 PM

Well unless they start banning a shitload of people,it isn't going to happen..we are just typing hot air

Blazed 06-23-2006 06:22 PM

Most of the useless bump posts etc are from old members with thousands of posts. Surfers will turn into webmasters anyway isnt that how everyone here became a webmaster? Havent been here long but in the little time i have really most of the useless posts are from established members not new members....

Elle Sommers 06-23-2006 06:46 PM

I'm torn on this. "Technically" I'm just a surfer.. I just look at pics of hot chicks, create semi-meaningless threads, post the occasional pic. I can't honestly say I've ever done business with anyone off GFY.

Yo your greenest, what about content people, hosting providers, content providers, reps, webmaster wannabees (yourself for example)?????

Brujah 06-23-2006 08:12 PM

Yes, way too many surfers. Names in green - intermediate spamming surfers. Names in red - pro surfer sigwhores.
