I don`t think a Geo-IP banner has ever shown me in the correct location. This common?
I could understand it if the location they showed for me was always the same (wrong) location however I see different areas that are nowhere near each other. Obviously the country is always correct...just the areas seem to be shot to pieces.
And my IP address is static before anyone asks. Anyone else see inconsistencies in the many geo ads that are online nowadays? |
it happens a lot. Not all providers use ip ranges that are issued for that region.
For example US providers with EU locations can use their ARIN issued ranges also in other locations. :2 cents: |
Some banners are really good! I live in a little place in Norway, and they got it perfect! I was amazed. But I have seen banners miss with almost half the country
|
yep they are always wrong for me too. I am always states away.
|
closest they ever got was a town 9km from here.
|
about 2-3 times they got my location correctly, AFF usually shows a town that's like across the country, probably about 1500 kms away

most people use the free database instead of the realistic close proximity pay one lol. |
GeoIP is not an exact science, it can only be as accurate as the location of the contact address for the IP block allocated to your ISP. Some scripts may be a bit more sophisticated and figure out more detail from the hostname but yeah it's not unusual for them to get it consistently wrong.
I'm in Australia and sometimes GeoIP thinks I'm in Geneva, Switzerland. |
