I dunno, if he's smart he'll let em' know he's not to be fucked with or some other info might get out. No doubt he did it. He's admitted it. What exactly he saw is still up in the air and in his court. he's got a lot to play with.

Shoehorn! 06-21-2006 06:57 PM

Vladimir Levin walked off with about $10 million from Citibank back in 1995, and with ahelluva lot less than a 56K modem. :thumbsup

Tdog 06-21-2006 07:23 PM

This guy was working on a 56k dial up. You would think he would have a little more juice when hacking away.

MaddCaz 06-21-2006 07:24 PM

fucked by large missiles!

minusonebit 06-21-2006 07:26 PM

Not bad, they are gonna crucify him for that. They have been trying to hide the ETs for years and this guy comes along and fucked it all up. But if he was smart, he wouldnt have done it from London... he would have done it from somewhere that he couldnt be extraditcted from...

L0rdJuni0r 06-21-2006 07:47 PM

disclosure project is something everyone needs to watch and ingest before they close the book on many aspects mentioned in that news article

V_RocKs 06-21-2006 08:28 PM

Why doesn't the US government want you to know about UFO's?

Because they are not in the bible and it would throw their whole way of life out of sync.

jono 06-21-2006 08:41 PM

Aliens definately exist.
It's just too big out there for them not to.
Any form of life not from earth is an Alien.

thats pretty simplistic right? because the universe is big... alien life forms advanced enough to travel to other galaxies, enter their atmospheres, land etc must exist? slow down chief... still looking for concrete signs of microbial life out there.

There is a flaw in his story.
I think it's bullshit.
Anyone else see it?

In this paragraph:

I logged on to NASA and was able to access this department. They had huge, high-resolution images stored in their picture files. They had filtered and unfiltered, or processed and unprocessed, files.

My dialup 56K connection was very slow trying to download one of these picture files. As this was happening, I had remote control of their desktop, and by adjusting it to 4-bit color and low screen resolution, I was able to briefly see one of these pictures.

I dunno... That whole 'Elijah getting whisked off the mountain by a fiery chariot wheel' thing sounds a little X-files-ish to me :winkwink:

Yes, a 56k and Notepad undermined the most sensitive computer network on Earth.

Sheesh. He got away with it for a year or more. Wonder what other hackers got away with.

he-fox 06-21-2006 10:47 PM

I don't buy it.

To everyone saying stuff like this, check the dates when he was doing it.

McKinnon, whose extensive search through U.S. computer networks was allegedly conducted between February 2001 and March 2002, picked a particularly poor time to expose U.S. national security failings in light of the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
He probably was using a 56k modem.. the only other options for most people were 128k IDSN, or a leased line... my 64k leased line cost me 350 quid per month (demon).. for someone who is unemployed, 350 quid is a lot of money.

At the time, a 56k dialup was not such a bad thing to do, I had 3 of them running next to my leased line.. You paid approx 20 quid per month, and your phone bill was not quite so bad...

Back in the day, (when I was 13/14), My phone bills would be approx 1,900 per quarter, because I was dialing up to other BBS's to download shareware for my own board.. Free Phone dialup was a great thing at the time.

From what I saw on 'Click' (bbc news24), he said he used a perl script, so I assume the script was on a commercial webserver, so he would have much more bandwidth available..

If he had just found a few open proxies first, he probably would not be in the shit now.

Also, I can't understand why the UK has let the yanks procecute him, they should have secured their servers better. We all get hack attempts every day, and most of us ensure that the attempts fail. Any stupid kid can try to brute force a server, it's not the hardest thing to do and there are thousands of tutorials online.

If you were in the UK, you were one of the lucky ones... we still cant get it here... we have a lot of dsl lines coming into the buildings, and our homes, because it is the only option that makes sense. We are looking into satalite, but upload speeds are not that great, and as paysite owners, we upload a lot.

Up here in the lake district, cable is not an option.. for TV, Sky is the best option... for internet connections, we use nildram, demon and bulldog.

Probably because they can't scoop up all the dinosaur bones. In the old days to explain dinosaur bones the people made up stories about dragons.
