Can someone explain to me how a chat bot works?
 

Does it sit there chatting with a surfer? Does the surfer realize he's chatting with a bot? Which one (if any) would you recommend?

Yes it does "Chat" with the surfer, it just looks for specif patterns of words and replies to them according to the database, at first users dont realize they are chatting with a bot but after a while they start to catch up cause either the pattern that the bot saw wasnt tied in to a specific reply or the reply was way off what the user was expecting to see back.

And i have no idea where you can get a chat bot from.

Yes it can fool the surfer, but most often it has to be really good to fool them over a long course of time. Here is one of the all time classic gfy threads where a very simple bot managed to befuddle a gfy regular. http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showth...&highlight=icq

One of the best bots I've seen recently is on the Mayorsmoney tours. For example, go to www.katyoung.com and scroll down and click the "live webcam" link and enter your name. Its a geo targeted bot that asks you questions based on where your ip is located and combines it with looping cam footage to give the surfer a very convincing feeling of chatting with the sites model.

Are you talking about spam chat bots? No, most do not chat with the surfer. Sign onto AIM and go into any chatroom. See how they work.
