It gets overloaded because of idiots doing constant and useless bumping of posts. And that's NOT a joke. :Oh crap

How is the search page related to the discussion and why would one overload the other?

Sorry, but that has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard in months. Why would a search against millions of dumbass post bumps make a difference???

You might need to consider a new career, and I think that Jack-in-the-Box needs more fry cooks. :Oh crap

ChargebackJoe 06-21-2006 10:05 PM

Then why does it work fine for one word searches but gives a white screen for two words? Any moron would see that it has nothing to do with the number of posts because then the first case would fail too. Searhing for one word vs. two words in a post should not make it crash, make it a bit slower yes but not total failure.

In vBulletin, when searching for multiple words, you will find that the results include posts that have one or more of the words you searched for. So for example, if you search for "one two three" the search will try to return all posts that have "one" or "two" or "three" or 2 out of three of those words or all three words in a post.

In essence, the chance of the search successfully returning results with a single word is higher than that of a search with multiple words.

ChargebackJoe 06-21-2006 10:16 PM

Interesting. Are there any tricks to go around that?

Well, I've found that search results, no matter how many words there were in the query, would sometimes bring back results and other times a blank page. So best advice I can give you would be to try the same search at a later time or use words that are not common in your query.

TexasDreams 06-21-2006 10:34 PM

considering the number of posts, the only solution on improving the search would be this.

Shut down the board for 72-hours to convert the code to use a mySQL full-text-search instead of using vBulletin's search. And then shut down the board at least 16-hours once a week to update the indexes.

Shut down the board for 24-hours a week continuing in using vBulletin's search. And then shut down the board at least 8-hours once a week to update the indexes. And permanently ban every user and their IP who uselessly bumps threads.

Leave it as it is, and not have any major downtime or having to charge users to be here.
