Link Lists vs TGPs (or Free Sites vs. FHG)
 

Why do link lists use free sites (supposedly) and TGPs use FHG? Whats the big draw for free sites? They seem nifty, but why?

free sites are great for seo.

so are fake text tgp's!

A typical free site is 4 pages, index, main, gal1, gal2. Thats 4 pages of 3 ads each.

A typical gallery is 1 page with 2 or 3 ads.

More advertising space.

Simply put, although too abused by lame auto replication software,

A free site for a link list is to represent a more valid site and long term standing link than a submitted gallery that will delete after a month or two and have no real content

The work involved to make good ones though are why they are sparse and
of course why auto replication was made and saturated the effectiveness and quality of the linklists

I understand how they'd be great for SEO, but if they are hosted by the sponsor it doesn't really help out the site...

To me, it only makes sense to use both. build your galleries, submit them, then build entrance pages and make freesites out of them.

Free sites recieve traffric for a much longer time than galleries

free sites - less traffic but better quality = better conversion

It sounds like you are referring to hosted free sites - not the submitted ones - and those are only used by link list owners and hubs as filler as the sales go directly to the LL owner instead of the submitters - there are so few people making good free sites to submit these days that LLs had to find some alternate sites to round out the listings - and hosted ones double the benefit
