Why do people refer to a 3-4000 sq. ft. home as a "Mansion"? So lame!

So this weekend I was invited to a "Mansion Party"... When I arrived it was more like a "Thats a pretty good sized home party"!
Ok... for all you people who throw around the term "Mansion" loosely... let me clarify for you. A 4 bedroom, 3500 sq ft house is not a mansion unless its in Manhattan or someplace similar! Lets get this straight ok. If the average Joe doesn't say "Oh my god this house is fucking HUGE!" when they arrive, its not a mansion. Please stop getting people's hopes up!

NOT A Mansion

BoyAlley 06-19-2006 08:43 PM

Yeah I definately wouldn't classify that as a mansion, but it is indeed a nice home....

avalanche 06-19-2006 08:44 PM

Completely agree. The only time I'd say "Mansion" would work for a home that size is if it's on 3 acres, a huge pool, basketball courts, pool house, etc. But then your combined square footage would probably be about 10,000 so either way......

That is a gorgeous home and used as an example. I would love to own that home.

Mr Pheer 06-19-2006 08:51 PM

top one is a Mansion, bottom one is a McMansion

and yes McMansion is the proper name for it, go look it up

Anthony 06-19-2006 08:52 PM

I remember back in my RE days, that anything over 5000 sq ft was considered as a small mansion, or the beginning of the classification.

pornguy 06-19-2006 08:54 PM

Depending on what they came from that might be a mansion.

notabook 06-19-2006 09:00 PM

Both of those are mansions to 90% of the world :) :321GFY

All I ask is that you don't invite me to a "Mansion Party" and I show up and can run around the entire outside of the house in under 8 seconds :1orglaugh

BSleazy 06-19-2006 09:18 PM

Ya that's maybe a $300,000 give or take house in Michigan depending on the area.

fallenmuffin 06-19-2006 09:20 PM

I agree but their all better then the 750 sq foot apartment I'm looking at renting.

BradShaw 06-19-2006 09:24 PM

Mansions are over-rated. I have lived in one, 12,000+ SF and nothing but headaches and big bills. Give me 3000 well laid out SF any day of the week. I rather spend my $ on important things, like cock and whores. I mean coke.

kristin 06-19-2006 09:28 PM

Actually ... it's considered a mansion at 5000 ft. I believe.

We had a decent sized house in Western New York growing up and I remember the reason by Dad didn't put on an addition was because it would then be classified as a mansion and the already insane NY taxes would go even higher.

tony286 06-19-2006 09:34 PM

you are correct , where we live there is a road thats all mansions. Some of them have to be over 10,000 sq ft . I cant imagine the fucking utility bills, even if I could afford it I wouldnt have one two people and three dogs in 10, 000 sq ft sounds very lonely lol.

Unless ya got more money than sense (or God), or there is some valid reason (sometimes there is), smells like a personality deficiency and a need to be relevant. :winkwink:

Half that is more than enough for a decent lifestyle - irrespective of "wealth".

Tho got a friend who does have more money than God and replicated Buckingham Palace (literally) - construction is OK, but the interior is in the most Gawd-aweful taste with fake leopard-skin carpets blah. The wall around the place prob cost more than the main construction - several miles of solid stone walling - about 12 feet high. Takes all kinds :1orglaugh

Sosa 06-19-2006 10:03 PM

I would take that bottom house any time.

Bdiddy 06-19-2006 10:03 PM

Would you like fries with your Mcmansion?

Doctor Dre 06-19-2006 10:10 PM

A mansion is when you need employes to take care of it.. (it would be impossible to work and take care of it proprely). That's my definition of a mansion.

I had a 3000 sq ft house, and had a maid come in twice weekly to clean it.

I guess by your definition, it's a mansion.

both are gorgeous homes but i would feel alot more comfortable living in number 2. i dont need much more than a 2 car garage and 5 bedrooms:pimp

Peaches 06-19-2006 11:10 PM

I brought this up a year or so ago on another board. IMO, if you have less that 10K sq ft and 20+ acres, you don't live in a mansion.

A good friend of mine built a house with 11K sq ft but it was more for investment purposes. Because of where it is, he'll be able to sell it for double what he paid for it (and when you start in the millions, double's pretty darned good) when he moves after getting his kids out of the school. In fact, now he's looking at property up near me. I'm about to make my RE agent a very happy woman :)

Peaches 06-19-2006 11:13 PM

I downsized when I moved to this house and it's perfect. Went from almost 4000 sq ft to just over 2000 sq ft. It's the perfect size for me :)

What kills me are these 12K+ sq ft homes on half an acre of land. So you either have to leave your blinds down all the time or hope you look good enough where your neighbors won't giggle about you at the HOA meetings.

Why?
I would NEVER EVER buy a house with more than like 4 bedrooms. Just pointless.
I'd be more comfortable living in a 2 bedroom cottage than a 17 bedroom mansion.

Yeah I agree...

Sarah_Jayne 06-20-2006 02:29 AM

Why does anyone care what anyone else calls their home? On the same note I would never call a home anything..it is what it is.

milambur 06-20-2006 03:00 AM

I'm thinking of building a house, so I was looking for inspiration and found this site:

This is one of my favorite plans:

Taboo 06-20-2006 03:54 AM

I believe over 5K is called a mansion. When it comes to my home, I like to call the whole place an OFFICE w/ living quarters. :winkwink:

Now if you really want to see some nice homes, checkout VH1 today and the rest of the week for:

Fabulous Life Of ... "Insane Celebrity Real Estate '06"
11:00am EST and replayed later.
check your local listings.

They played it last night and featured Joe Francis' (Girls Gone Wild) pad in Mexico, I believe 28,000 sq ft party beach house with an "ANYTHING BUTTON" by everything phone... and he means "anything" for his celeb guests that frequently stay over. Pales in comparison to Trump's latest House project he's building to flip ($125M) highest priced home in USA and will most likely get asking price. 68,000 sq ft. I don't think it even should be called a Mansion, it's more like an American Palace, but even that's not a good enough description, it might even have it's own zip code. I just wish I could afford it and then I'd fill it up with every poor or homeless person I could find cause most likely it will be bought by someone who won't even live there most of the time. :)

.

V_RocKs 06-20-2006 04:02 AM

I don't think it is square feet or even the number of rooms or bathrooms or a ratio there of.

I am thinking it has a lot more to do with the land it is on and the decor and the general overall feel. I have seen 8 bedroom houses that look like a mansion and others that look more like a ghetto apartment complex.

scottybuzz 06-20-2006 04:12 AM

i agree, see sig

jayeff 06-20-2006 04:24 AM

Of course, sneering at other peoples' pretentiousness or lack of knowledge doesn't show a whole lot of class either...

When I was younger, anything 6 bedrooms or more was considered a mansion. Then again, we were BROKE in a 2 bedroom 600 sqf dump. I guess with the advent of Cribs, peoples' opinions have changed. :upsidedow

The Ghost 06-20-2006 05:21 AM

Oh, and I'll add that if everyone's house on your block looks JUST like yours, it's not a mansion.

those type are popping up all over the place here! not 12k sq ft but still decent sized, probably 2-4x the area of a normal house, then they are literally 20 feet apart from one another :1orglaugh

I can't imagine wanting to pay several hundered thousand dollars in this area to be nearly as close to one's neighbor as if it were an apartment complex.

wyldblyss 06-20-2006 06:45 AM

I agree! The second pic is certainly not a mansion

Yeah I gotta agree with you on that one Brad, big houses come with big bills.

what is yours like, btw?

By that definition, though... a lot of Frat House Bathrooms would be considered 45-square-foot mansions.
