When someone comes to buy a used car from you, they don't pay by check, right?

I am selling one of my cars today and just came to the realization that I didn't tell the lady that I wanted cash or money order

do people try and pay by check these days for a used car under $5000? With all the scams and nutjobs out there, I would think they would know better and come with cash or something official, you know?

now I am worried, cause she is driving 2 hours for this car

Fuckin Bill 06-18-2006 09:03 AM

If you're in the US, you should be able to call the bank to verify the check is good. Although it might be difficult on Sunday.

MandyBlake 06-18-2006 09:04 AM

you don't have a cell number for her?
if she has a check she can always go to a check cashing place....i would assume.

Slick 06-18-2006 09:05 AM

ALSO be careful because nowadays even money orders aren't safe.

hate to say it, but if she does actually try and write me a personal check I will have to turn her down or try and figure something else out.....maybe her bank will have a 800# to call for this sort of shit

Nothing stopping her from withdrawing the cash from an ATM once it's verified and the check is in his hands. She's 2 hours from him. It's a Sunday. It's Father's Day.

Unless she has cash, this seems fishy.

even cashier's checks can be fake...

my father faxed me a copy of the bogus cashier's check he just got from a buyer in North Carolina who wants to buy his car in South Florida...with a cashier's check that was mailed from the buyer's accountant in New York from a bank that only has locations in Washington state.

hmmmm...scam perhaps :1orglaugh

They wanted my father to give the overage of the cashier's check ($3,000) to the buyer's local shipper.

Here's a link about the specific fake cashier's checks

Yeah...that changed my view on Cashier's Checks. Cash is the only option, just make sure that's real now too. Some crackheads in my area all just got busted passing fake 20s. Just keep the car :winkwink: :1orglaugh

haha, well, luckily I have my ways of clearing some fake bills ;) haha

crockett 06-18-2006 09:39 AM

never take a personal check unless they are willing to go to their bank with you so you can cash it. Wayyyy too easy for you to get ripped off.

gooddomains 06-18-2006 09:42 AM

gooddomains 06-18-2006 09:43 AM

I sold three cars in the last 2 years and never accepted anything than cash

KRosh 06-18-2006 09:46 AM

Do not take a personal check.
The only option is if she wants to write you a check then you go with her (on Monday) to HER bank and cash the money!

:2 cents:

rowan 06-18-2006 11:54 AM

I wouldn't even trust a bank cheque these days - my friend got diddled with a fake one. Luckily his car was recovered (eventually)

Jace 06-18-2006 11:56 AM

FUCK

SO....this fucking cunt gets here and is ecstatic about buying my god damned car....we drive it around, she checks it out, everything is great...she is bouncing in the seat on the drive back because she is so excited

She pays me, I give her a bill of sale, and her and her family drive off to make their drive back to North Carolina

She calls me 10 minutes later in tears because she didn't know what she got into....I tell her to come back. She gets back and explains that she had never driven a classic VW Bug before and she didn't think it would be good to drive cross country to LA and back once a month...WELL DUH!!!!! why would you want to buy a classic car and put that kind of abuse on it??????

The fucking nice guy I am, I take back her money and send her on her way

woj 06-18-2006 01:07 PM

There is no need to create drama over <$5k car, take the check, make a copy of her drivers license, give her the keys to the car, and tell her you will send her the title once the check clears...

Matt 26z 06-18-2006 01:10 PM

I personally wouldn't pay cash for a car in a private sale.

You didn't take a deposit for that kind of thing?

Sly 06-18-2006 01:29 PM

My dad is a mechanic and he bought/fixed/sold cars on the side for my whole life. He always paid cash when buying cars and always sold for cash. No substitutes, and he's probably sold well over 100 cars in his lifetime.

So, go cash. There's no reason this person can't get the cash.

I would have bought it back, for $250 less. She wasted your time and forced you to decline other pursuing interests.

North Carolina to L.A. once a month? Is she a drug runner?

TurboAngel 06-18-2006 03:32 PM

Yea that woman is mental.

:)

Tom_PM 06-18-2006 03:35 PM

I must say, thats one odd story! To drive cross country? Holy cow. The gas money alone would kill you, why doesnt she fly? wtf, lol.

I've been trying to think of what kind of a scam she could be trying to pull, but if nothing was signed over, and no money changed hands etc.. then I can't think of anything really.

Mr. Romance 06-18-2006 03:35 PM

If she crashes it, he's on the hook. He's the owner and her insurance won't pay for it. She could easily say she was borrowing it and deny that he sold it to her. Also, depending on where he lives, he'd have to pay his deductible to get it fixed.

Get cash or no deal... She's silly to think you'd take a check, unless you've discussed it with her before hand.

flashbang 06-18-2006 04:07 PM

is the car insured? take the check, and hope it gets stolen

TurboAngel 06-18-2006 04:13 PM
