Poll: The Truth About Consoles

There is much debate about Consoles! How many consoles (Entrance and Exit) do you have on your site?

From the users perspective it offers a poor surfer experience. It is annoying and inconvenient.

From an affiliate/paysite perspective, they are efficient ways to drive additional revenue. It provides great opportunities for partnering with other affiliate programs and offers creative ways to retain customers.

So my question is: How many consoles is "Too Many" consoles?

my playstation 2 is getting dusty ever since i discovered i could make money from porn.

LoveAsianChicks 05-29-2002 02:56 PM

I have zero.
I can see websites using 1-2 exit consoles to make some extra money, but think more then 2 and it just becomes annoying.

boneprone 05-29-2002 02:56 PM

3-4 is ideal.
Anything more is just tooo fucking much.
First 2 should be regualrsized, the other one or two should be smaller windows.

I hate those ones that open in a full screen that you cant get out of.
Just classless.

boneprone 05-29-2002 02:58 PM

if you have a good program like bangbus or chicktrick that sells itself you really dont need any.

Sites with more the popups equals less the power of selling off thier shitty front end.

plus you gotta understand, the surfer is not just lookin at your site. if every site they look at "ONLY" has or 2 popups that gets so annoying so fast. only so long before everyone uses popupcop or MSIE has integrated anti-popup stuff like opera.

a1ka1ine 05-29-2002 03:04 PM

i hate poppus and dont use them on my sites. :321GFY

boneprone 05-29-2002 03:06 PM

on paysites its almost a must unless your idea is soo catchy you dont need any.

Like i said the more popups they have the shittier the front end.
Shows the owner lacks confidence in his front end to sell.
If they lack the confidence why should you promote em?

TopCashQ 05-29-2002 03:19 PM

boneprone's right - more than 3 to 4 is proabably overdoing it.

a1ka1ine, I agree that popups are annoying but I must say that I think it's a mistake to just dismiss the possibility of using exit/entry popups just because you find them annoying, personally. Ignoring a potentially large revenue stream due to your own personal tastes just doesn't seem like a good idea in this particular business.

That's just my :2 cents: though - I don't think there's a "right" answer to the question. I just know we make good money off of our consoles, so we're not likely to drop them anytime soon.

Anything more than 2 is too much imho.. If sponsors would chill on them a bit maybe surfers wouldn't worry about being nailed every time they click on one of our sponsors.. Meaning we would get more clicks.. I would think poping one big hub page is good enough..

:2 cents:

As a surfer, if I run into one pop-up I back the fuck right out of there. If the site has one pop-up, what's to say there isn't 5 more pop-ups on the next page? I don't want my surfers thinking the same thing, so I say fuck the pop-ups. I may use one every now and then though, but I'd much rather have a surfer knowing I won't freeze up their computer.

From a resellers point of view I think exit consoles are fine. They've already decided not to buy what you're selling so why not offer them something else that you'll get paid for? (Especially if I get paid for it too :winkwink: )

What does annoy me from my point of view (resellers view, not a surfers) is the onload consoles on the front page of a tour.
A) I think you should give them a chance to have a pleasant buying experience. If they leave that's one thing, but with the onload you'll have people signing up for a membership, and when they close the onload pop they get hit with 2 more and THEY BOUGHT A MEMBERSHIP!
also,
B) Even when you blur the console in your code, it doesn't ALWAYS pop behind, depending on how fast the tour page loads and how fast the console loads, that friggin think pops up and covers the tour window. So now the surfer I sent to your tour doesn't even see the tour, he sees the console and clicks off somewhere else and I don't get shit for it.

Of course all of this pales in comparison to one experience I had. As a surfer I signed up for a membership at Vivids website (don't remember how long its been, but its been awhile) and they would send me to console hell everytime I left the members area. I mean fuck I was paying like $40 a month for a membership, but they crashed my damn browser every time I left. Can you say Cancel and Refund?

I understand what you're saying, but if a really high/significant percentage of surfers did the same thing, those of us making good money off using the consoles wouldn't be making that money, right?

I see where you're coming from in terms of consoles eroding the surfer's trust in the site that pops the console, too, but that assumes they even know what is causing the console to pop in the first place. I don't think most surfers are anywhere near as net-savvy as the average adult webmaster is, given our experience on the other side of the curtain (so to speak).

Sly_RJ 05-29-2002 03:50 PM

Good point TCQ. Surfers may not be technology savvy, but they're not stupid either. When a toddler touches a hot stove, they learn to not touch it again.

time delay pop are sweet, too

of course, you gotta use them on the right kind of traffic. Put it on a link list/AVS free site, or a TGP site/gallery, and it will hurt you

but on the other stuff....
chain, chain, chain
