Australia are certainly better this year than they were last, and they'll be able to put up a challenge in the tri-nations, particularly with south africa's poor performance against scotland in the last couple of weeks. But they're far from being the 2nd best team in world rugby at the moment. At this point, anyone could trounce england. Have you seen their Six nations performances for the last 2 years? Simply awful. Hell, even Ireland have beaten them either 3 or 4 times in a row in six nations encounters.

And Australia didn't rely on Flatley every bit as much as England relied on Wilkinson? Did you even see the final? I vaguely remember England scoring the same number of tries as Australia did (1), and Wilkinson scoring just as many penalties as Flatley did (4). The drop goal was the only difference. And you'd be crazy to suggest Wilkinson did that all on his own. The forward pack has to put him into that position in the first place, you know.

Agreed but, the reason why Wilkinson was such a devastating player to have one your team is due to the fact that he can kick goals from 50metres out. So infact your forward pack didn't have to do a whole lot to get him in range.

Not my forward pack. Hell, i'm Irish. Just sick to death of hearing Australians complain about losing to england and saying they only did it 'cause of Wilkinson. Sure, Wilkinson can kick dropgoals from 40-50 metres out, but when it's in the dying seconds of the match, you'd much rather your forward pack puts you in a position where you're going to nail it 99% of the time. Unless you're Stephen Larkham, of course. ;)

The games in the lead up to the final are proof enough.

They got it together on the day when it mattered the most and beat Australia fairly and squarely. Australia would have just as fucked without Flatley as England would have been without Wilkinson.
