S.O. a B. My Blood Pressure is 140/100

So I am signing up for life insurance and going for a few million so my family can enjoy the good life even if I am not there to provide it. They send some people over to do a 'stress test' and give me a physical.

Everything is going good until the doctor does my blood pressure (just before I am about to do the stress test) and he gets a look like he just saw satan pop out of my arm (not the SatanCash Satan either). I am like, what's up? He calls the other guy over and asks if he has a kit to do blood pressure and he says yeah and then he does it. He also looks like he is looking at Satan.

I am like, WTF? They ask how my diet is. I say, I don't know... Like any 34 year olds diet I guess... Some fast food, BBQ, lots of beer, hot links, snacks, ice cream... etc... He asks if I ever exercise... Sure I do walks with my GF here and there... He asks if they are hard to do.. God, no, if they were I'd just slow down...

He hooks up the EKG and looks like he is seeing the devil again.. WTF, I ask?

He says I have an irregular heart beat... I say, ok, and what does this tell you? He asks if I have insurance and suggests I go to the emergency room and show them my EKG print out. I am like WTF?

So I go to the doctor and he asks if I ever felt wierd in the area of my heart before... Like something moved around... Once in a while... I figured it might just be indigestion... He says nope... Your irregular heart beat is directly connected to your BP being so fucking high. He asks how long it has been so high and I don't have a clue. Last time I went to the doctor was 4 years ago.

Luckly it is all about leaving salt out of my diet, removing high fat foods and heavely proccessed ones too. (bacon, sausage). And eating more fruits and veggies. Lucky for me my GF is into eating right so she just gives me what she makes for herself. (which makes me wonder why she was feeding me the bacon and shit)... Losing a few pounds and not drinking beer by the pitcher... Doctor says it should go back down to 120/80 which is normal.

So I ask my mum and pops about pops and my uncles... Dad is ok but his brother who shares my body type had his first stroke at 36 years old. It was attributed to high BP... Fuck... Now I know why I sometimes get dizzy...

So there is my slice of life... Now go and get your shit checked out before you require meds... Once you require them, it is hard to get your body to stop requiring them and you go into the high risk category. No insurance carrier will insure you once you do...

Peace..

Holy fuck.

I have all those things. I get dizzy sometimes, I don't work out hardly at all, I eat whatever whenever. And I feel pain or weirdness in my chest from time to time. Also just thinking its heartburn or something.

I'm 21 but high BP runs in my family. I guess I better get my ass to the doctor.

Thanks for the info.

21? Ouch... At 21 I was 155 pounds (wet)... I was a scronny kid until I hit about 23 or 24 and bulked up (working out) to 195. Most people thought I was a football player. When I'd go to signup for classes in college they'd tell me that athletes use that line over there (the one with 5 people in it instead of 500).

But all of that working out stopped at about age 29 and I kept the habits of eating big and especially making meat the center piece of my meal. All the butter a potato could hold and mushrooms in butter... Shrimp dipped in melted butter... etc...

Didn't really start feeling like shit until last year... I couldn't imagine being 21 and having this high of bloode pressure.

Dude,
I can empathize with you - Back in March I had a short stint in the hospital for something, and you'd have thought I was there for a quadrupal bypass, the way they looked @ me when they'd do my BP.

Crazy stuff~

Take care - with some simple changes, it'll go back down,
Fitz

pssssh.. That's nothing. I've had my BP at 180/90 before.

Sorry but 140/100 isn't that high, at least the 140 isn't, you should be worried about the 100 but I think it should be relatively easy to control (maybe with medication).

Besides the rule with blood pressure is that you should never use a single measurement to make a diagnostic, you should measure it at least 3 times on different days.

Sorry to hear this. Diet and excercise is the thing we all need to do. We all know but how many of us are able to do it.

140 isn't high.. exactly what they said.. Actually it is.. But it is the threshhold of high...

The 100 is very high. Even though it to would show as a threshhold, it is a number that means more for each incriment. Kinda like the richtor scale.

So just going up 5 more points on that number is a huge deal. Basically it is like having a heart pump at a resting period as hard as someone who is in shape is pumping when doing a brisk walk for a few minutes. It isn't a good idea to have your heart work that hard when you are sitting at the computer working...

Or driving...

The abnormal ekg in addition is the cause for alarm. Now you need to do regular checkups. I go every three months. Then again, I've had two heart attacks and bypass..

Eat right, exercise constantly and you'll be fine :thumbsup

Yep! The 100 part is way too high, hope that the diet changes can help get that down to a resonable number.

I can imagine mine gets up there while driving at times, too many morons on the roads these days. :1orglaugh

But for now I just took my pressure and it's a nice safe 108/73. :)

Did you get the policy?

BoyAlley 06-17-2006 12:07 PM

Well just be happy your wakeup call came in the form of a checkup and not in the form of a heart attack.

Here's for your new mission of leading a more healthy life :thumbsup

Not yet, so I quickly got a $100K policy that no one will do a physical on so I have "something".
