Mainstream server and hosting questions

i need to get a hosting account (shared is fine) for a small mainstream project im about to start working on. Thanks to a friend, i've had an offer from a very reputable mainstream hosting company for a customized package including 150GB disk space and 1.5TB monthly transfer (1500GB) on a dual-core P4 box with (RAID) SCSI drives. My cost for all of this comes out to just under $150/yr.

now here is my question. i was reading the TOS and under Server Resources it reads:
Any Web site that uses a high amount of server resources (such as, but not limited to, CPU time, memory usage, and network resources) will be given the option to either pay additional fees (which will depend on the resources required), reduce the resources used to an acceptable level, or upgrade its service to a Dedicated Server plan. We will be the sole arbiter of what is considered to be a high server usage level. Any Web Hosting and Ecommerce account deemed to be adversely affecting server performance or network integrity will be shut down without prior notice.

is this pretty much stardard TOS for hosting companies or should i be concerned about this? i dont want my shit to just be taken offline without any notice.

I hope the $150/year is a typo

nah, you read it right. $150 (total) for the first year on a shared box.

darksoul 06-15-2006 08:52 AM

must be dreamhost or something alike.

well, for since a price do you really need to ask questions ?
even if they fuck you over you don't have much to complain about.

Lycanthrope 06-15-2006 08:54 AM

In that case I would be very concerned. I obviously don't know what company it is, but they are priming you for a ton of extra charges or to pull your sites as they see fit. My guess is is that they oversell like a mofo and I doubt you'd get all the resources promised if you needed them.

baddog 06-15-2006 08:59 AM

Way too cheap. But hey, if they decide to shut you down, you are only out $150, right? </sarcasm>

XSV 06-15-2006 08:59 AM

Are you sure it said 1.5 TB's (1500 GB's) per month? I would double check that. I have seen several sites alluding to that, but what it really is when you break it down is the annual usage. At that rate you should thank them for paying you to host you and be sure to keep local back-ups handy. That is priced under what it costs the tier 1 providers to operate their networks. They are overselling or blowing out unused BW at a loss just to get cash flow.

Would love to see a link to the site to read the offer.

:2 cents:

Man, get a virtual plan (the cheapest) at Dream Host
$7.95/month for 1000 GB bandwidth, unlimited domains and subdomains, 1 FREE domain registration included in the price, 20 GB disk storage ...
and don't worry about CPU ... Recently, this is not such a big issue anymore, according to their newsletter, and in the past anyway, a customer was given plenty of time to reduce CPU in case of a high level ... (that did not apply to usual static HTML pages, with low CPU) ...
Please contact me on ICQ 30160426 if you need more info.

fuck no :1orglaugh , nothing like dreamhost, it's one of the bigger mainstream companies. the only reason i am getting such a great deal is because i have a friend that does a shitload a business with them and his ass owes me some favors. hell, for all i know these rules may not even apply to my deal. just wanted to know if disclaimers like this are standard in mainstream hosting?

no offense to dreamhost because i really haven't looked into them that much, but i have seen alot of threads in the past complaining about them. that makes me a little nervous with them.

talking about standards is nowhere near standard offering 5Mbps and 150GB per month for $12/mo at no sane mainstream hosting company.

Yeah, that's what it said (i triple checked that :1orglaugh ). The offer isn't on a
site though, my friend emailed me the offer and the company (by request) faxed me a confirmation of the offer.

What I never get in these stupid whoring threads, is that you all look at what THEY give you ... ( for real, or bs ).

How about what YOU really need to start with ... The original poster says, and I quote :

Quote:

(shared is fine) for a small mainstream project im about to start working on
.

From that point, you can evaluate what is available from serious companies, and select the one you want.

As an example, I offer from mainstream virtual:

300 megs storage
15 gigs BW
Cpanel/Fantastico
Unlimited for other features:

3.99/month ...

You need more later on : you upgrade ....

I have a car, because I need a car ... Don't offer me a bus, even if it is dirt cheap ... because I don't feel like paying the extra gas, or finding parking, and so on ..

Good luck.

yeah, i get your point. but honestly i dont have the slightest clue how much bandwidth i am going to need. if i started out with 15GB BW and needed to upgrade to 1TB BW, its gonna cost me alot more than $150 vs. being locked in at $150/yr for 1.5TB BW.

Anybody serious will cost you more, and way more, than 150.00/year for 1.5 TB of BW per month ...

That type of quantity ( not quality .. ) of bandwith is mainly required by paysite with movie d/l and many members ...

As Baddog said, at the worst, you lose 150.00 and the time to reinstall somewhere else :2 cents:

If you haven't made a decision, hit me up joed at klixxx dot com and I'll get you a Cyberwurx contact just for comparison's sake - especially if you plan to use WordPress :)

Spudstr 06-15-2006 09:51 AM

that box should cost you 150/month not per year.

Marshal 06-15-2006 10:09 AM
