Why is porn so cheap? we need to raise our prices

the price of everything else is going up and Porn is still the same.

hell it cost me $50 a month at my gym, over $100 for my cable I can go on and on. Why is porn still the same price if inflation is going up. every other service has been raising there prices?

Corleone 06-14-2006 11:18 AM

competition :(

Nicky 06-14-2006 11:22 AM

very true, id love to see a 30-40% raise all over the board

BoogieCFZ 06-14-2006 11:24 AM

1) competition
2) so much given away for free.

if there were 3,000,000 free tv stations you'd bet your sweet ass the price of your cable would be cheap as shit.

RogerV 06-14-2006 11:24 AM

We pay alot to shoot our own exclusive content and its not cheap.

How can we make more? every guy needs to wack off we all know that right?

we hold the golden ticket how do we all make more off it.. Just like Gas they keep raising the prices knowing we will pay

nestle 06-14-2006 11:25 AM

Well, at the gym maybe they are getting better equipment and they up the membership fee to balance their cost out. Cable is getting more expensive because you are getting HD, more channels, etc.

There's really nothing new being introduced in the porn industry... as in, content doesn't offer anything new and you can't add in any value to content. In fact, I think there are more and more girls out there that are willing to do shoots for a lot less than what they were used to maybe let's say 5-10 years ago. This is reducing the cost of producing content. Thereby reducing the cost of presenting it.

Bottom line: the porn industry thrives on volume of sales rather than quality of sales. Generally speaking, if you try raising prices, then your volume is going to go down. If you lower prices, your volume is more likely to rise up.

slapass 06-14-2006 11:25 AM

this is so true. Trials should all be at least the cost of a playboy and the monthly could go up the same.

RogerV 06-14-2006 11:27 AM

Just like you need Gas to get to work you need to wake off so you dont get Blue balls..

Maybe we should start censoring the free content now and make them pay for it.. trust me they all will

RogerV 06-14-2006 11:35 AM

so many smart people and no solutions? WTF

Agree Roger - Anyone supplying live sex on a PC screen "should" at least qualify for a $50 monthly subscription.

Or.. upsell.. give em the basics for $30 and if they want the "better stuff" - $30 extra for "Gold Membership".

quantum-x 06-14-2006 11:49 AM

If you're doing something exclusive and niche, you can set your prices how you feel. It might take members a little longer to join, but they will join.

Look at the multi tiering options available on some sites :)

Jace 06-14-2006 11:52 AM

My wife has been saying the same thing about our site

She works at a strip club two night a week where guys pay $20 a dance.....we charge $5 more for our site...so for $25 they access to download every video of her fucking on camera she has ever done.....

I personally think we are undercharging also

So you think porn is a commodity in a perfectly competitive environment?

Jman 06-14-2006 11:57 AM

You should rally up with GW Bush. I am sure he'll come up with a nice porn taxe to inflate pricing.

He's good at shit like that :Oh crap

CIVMatt 06-14-2006 11:57 AM

Pointless seeing how there is SO much free porn out there now....

Exactly right. Though I'd like to make more money just as much as the next guy, there are a lot more factors involved than just inflation. :thumbsup

Big_Red 06-14-2006 12:02 PM

Ok lets make a movement then. We can set the market. Don't let the consumer do it.

What pisses me off is that every day there are new paytises out there chargings $14.95 or $19.95 at the most!

aico 06-14-2006 12:21 PM

Too much free porn, can't raise the prices. We dug our own graves, now we are lying in them.

Gyms charge more cuz they keep up with the newer equipment.

Porn is and has been Photos and Videos, nothing new has come out of here in a long time. If anything it should have gone down in price, not up. :2 cents:

exactly guys have the money you just have to tease them but they will all pay.
I think the industry has lost the tease because you can get so much for free..
if we had some control on what was free I know everyone would make 50% more then they are now. from tgp's to paysites etc.

I have always said censor the pink and make them pay for it..

Then rev-share might have a chance LOL

I know it will never be done because of the nature of the industry and greeed

Actually, the GOP killed the porn tax bill in congress last year, because then it makes it legit...

PS- This in no way a endocement for the GOP, just stating the facts... :winkwink:

Getting something like this done in this industry is like trying to get the to unite against a company like acacia. It wont happen.

madawgz 06-14-2006 12:33 PM

its impossible, there is too much competition

Joey B. Lo 06-14-2006 12:35 PM

Exactly.

The key is to get as many of the biggest players possible to join in and raise prices, to make this a sure thing you need a lot of programs and sites to start raising prices so that the surfers are forced to pay higher.

Love Sex 06-14-2006 12:44 PM

porn isnt worth as much as you think...

a blowjob is the same price as joining a paysite in most places.

TheDoc 06-14-2006 12:46 PM

About 100 reasons you can't raise prices.

1) Most paysites don't update enough and/or don't really have enough content. Want to charge more, update more with better content. Would you keep your expensive cable if you only got 4 new movies a month, and everything else was ALWAYS the same? Cable has 100's of new shows/movies every month, may be the same show, but it's a new episode.

2) Most member areas offer nothing but content and leased content, no message boards, real filler content, personal touches, and the list goes on.

3) Customer support in this business is a flat fucking joke. From billing companies to how paysite companies handle support. Some do it correctly, most don't.

4) We get to xsale, upsell, emails, etc.. tons of ways to re-convert the same client, with much larger upgrade costs than say a phone company.

5) The average member stays between 1.5 - 3.5 months, that should be a damn good sign. Just like good shows, if the site is good people will stay and return, if not they move on to another channel.

6) Mainstream companies for the most part get to deal with clients only within the region they do business in. We get to do it across the world, 24/7 we get to take sales, and our sites NEVER take a day off unless something breaks. Ever tried to buy cable at 1am?

7) A handful of porn companies have 200+ staff, how many have 1000+, or 20k employees? How many have top of the line insurance, investment packages, stock options, public companies, have 10 locations, put products in your homes, and so on? The costs to run a cable company are a bit larger than running a porn company.

Not everything is going up, my ISP, hosting costs, content production, internet phones, design, almost everything we deal with has gone down in prices, making us more net profit percentages.

Free content doesn't affect our costs, it affects ratios. If you have the content, the site, the features, you can charge $40+. But I can only name one or two sites that come close to being worth that much. Not even my own sites are worth that.

Love Sex 06-14-2006 12:47 PM

If everyone raised prices the winner will be the guy who still has the best movies.

Pornwolf 06-14-2006 12:49 PM

I totally agree Roger. I never understood what the rationale was behind charging the same amount for a membership as a single new release porn DVD in a video store. Prices should be $49.95 on average. People would pay but webmasters are scared to go there.

Why are webmasters so scared to ask for what they want? We all want the same things after all.

But many prefer jerking to porn on the web over a blowjob from a hooker. This is true for many reasons, 1 no one's ever gotten a disease from internet porn, 2 you don't have to leave your house and peeps are lazy, 3 getting a hooker is dangerous in many places illegal, 4 porn is not physically cheating on your mate, 5 etc etc etc etc.... My point, for really good porn, no price is too high. As for this thread, if all the good programs charged $49.95, people would pay it. Maybe we should start a webmasters price fixing union lol :winkwink:

Your idea reminds me tgp2. It would have been great if all tgp1 switched to tgp2 but it's impossible until there is a law about it... wich isn't going to happen now.

yes but people don't respond to free porn from 5 years ago, they respond to fresh stuff. so no longer giving away so much for free now would have nearly the exact same effect as if there never were so much free porn circulating to begin with

I'm not saying that I've ever heard you make this claim but if the gfy BS is correct most programs receive the majority of joins from SEO people who have little need to give away lots of free hardcore samples. So quit giving away so much free hardcore to the affiliates if this is true.

At some point conversions might drop to the point where it will make sense to do so. Unless that is someone turns the situation around prior to getting to that point.

SgtStrider 06-14-2006 01:05 PM

dude if you raise your prices ill keep mine where they are and tell everyone im cheaper then you and theyll want my stuff LOL so go for it

rankscom 06-14-2006 01:07 PM

A better comparison would be something like online music services (Rhapsody, Yahoo Music, etc) which I believe charge about $14.95/mo for unlimited DRM downloads. Other good comparisons would be movie streaming services like Vongo (9.95) or unlimited licensed game downloads like GameTap (14.95). To be honest, I've seen very few pay-sites that can beat those values. Porn cost much less to produce as well. In fact, content should result in less than 20% of a pay-sites overhead.

One can argue both sides... but ultimately our industry has to be realistic on where it stands in value. Higher prices worked well in the past when users had little resources to help find quality sites at bargain prices (Videobox.com, 9.95). In the next few years, such resources (review sites, etc) in our industry will drive prices down (not up) as users get more informed and sites need to slash prices to compete.

In the end, it should result in better sites (at better values) and users signing up to more sites per month. TGP's will most likely suffer as they deal with lower and lower conversions, but that's not necessarily a bad thing since less free porn should increase the quantity of signups.

Just my 2 cents! :)

Well, $20 a dance is great but how many people does she get? Max 5 maybe and thats a lot of work. A paysite can get 10 to 100 to 200 sales a day and she does the same amound of work. And a dance is one one one, a paysite isnt, you can compare it to that dude...

why is it that so many online porn outfits seem to consider that their only customer base are the people that would be searching through bargain bins in brick & mortar stores?

people find something that interests them and then they see if they can afford to hand over the money for it. I doubt if very many start out with $X in their hand and comparison shop for porn after making a price decision.

Most porn DVD's online avg about $15:
http://adult.dvdempire.com/Exec/v1_l... 752&site_id=7

They only cost that much because the internet still hasn't evolved to the living room for most consumers. A DVD Is still the only convenient way to watch porn on your TV. I don't know the stats, but DVD porn should be losing ground every year as video quality on porn sites improve.

Damn straight.. Porn will get cheaper. My music yahoo I think is $10 a year, unlimited music, 100's of stations. Same with xm radio, many news / video sites have started to setup with super cheap costs.

So many people just don't understand what the market really is doing.

Get 100,000 hits, convert 1:1000 at $40x100 sales you make $4k
Get 100,000 hits, convert 1:500 at $20x200 sales you make $4k

Now what's worth more? They both made the same, but the 1:500 guy has 50% more members to bring back, xsale, or convert to another site for more money. Prices will drop.
