Is it normal for a DSL connection to be dropped once per day?

My DSL connection gets fucked about once per day. I have to power down and up my modem and router to reconnect.

Today it fucking happened when I had a full house with a big pot and 3 other suckers in the hand who had no fucking idea what was about to happen to them. I am so fucking pissed I could scream.

Is it typical for a DSL connection to be dropped once per day? Or is my ISP a bunch of fucking useless c.unts? I've been eyeing a new ISP, a much smaller company than the one I deal with now (which is a major ISP here in Canada) - so should I dump them and go with the small company?

Grapesoda 06-13-2006 08:18 PM

they are rotating the conection . . . or url or whatever it is . . you do not have a static line

Spunky 06-13-2006 08:21 PM

That doesn't sound normal at all.I use Telus and it's been stable

I am using Telus too. And I am getting dropped just enough for me to tolerate it up till now. But this time... I mean it was A FUCKING NUTS FULL HOUSE!!!! GRRRRRRR!!

sweetgirl2006 06-13-2006 09:15 PM

Telus is probably upgrading again, but it should be stable.

I have Comcast in the states -- it drops about 5 times/day .. but I'm on it a LOT when I'm working, so I notice it more.

directfiesta 06-13-2006 09:25 PM

If they are upgrading, their are shifting connectivity ...

I had sympatico drop for 10-20 minutes at a time for a whole week ... They said it was my modem. To Oman of Sitedepth, they said it was his Network card ... To a neignboor, they said his phones were the problem ...

Saw a bunch of truck in the neighborhood ... called them back.. they admitted there was MAJOR problems...

So fuck them, I ordered a dry-loop , switching my last landline to Vonage and the net to cable ... Fuck the Telco ...

DSL where I live drops out everytime it rains, speeds are about half of what they say (700kbps or so, supposedly 1.5mbps), random disconnects, just a whole bunch of shit. I can't get cable here so I'm sol until they run some new wires... fucking ancient copper wiring.

Martin3 06-13-2006 09:32 PM

Nope. I use SBC and connection only drops once every 30-45 days(according to router logs)

I did have a problem a few years ago with the connection dropping alot and slow speeds. Turned out to just be a bad line in the wall. Had it rewired and everythin has been fine since.

Call them up and have them run some tests on your line and modem and see if there's a problem anywhere. Could just be them dropping it to cycle ip's. But that shouldn't require you restarting your modem.

Call up your ISP. I would've done so the second consecutive day it happened.

madawgz 06-13-2006 10:00 PM

american pervert 06-13-2006 11:05 PM

Sinstar 06-13-2006 11:11 PM

My DSL drops once an hour. Cable will be installed on Thursday though! :)

xclicks 06-13-2006 11:15 PM

wow.. I'm with Telus in Vancouver..
My connection stays okay for weeks, I didn't reset the modem or router for last 6 months. I have a dynamic IP so nothing special.

popy 06-13-2006 11:46 PM

My dsl did that a couple of time but i complain and got back my money for those day I could not use it correctly.

rowan 06-14-2006 12:33 AM

How's your power? It could be dips and spikes and a modem sensitive to that. Mine would occasionally lock up, it's now on a UPS and it hasn't skipped a beat.

Vitasoy 06-14-2006 06:58 AM

Hmm never had problems like that with my ISP.

GiveIntoMe 06-14-2006 07:06 AM

Well stop downloading all those dvds off torrentspy/thepiratebay. :) :)

Everything is off of two UPSs, so I think I am covered there.

Thanks for the info everyone - it sounds like a wide range of experiences. I'll call my ISP and see what they can do about it, and if they can't get it fixed then I will move onto someone else.

Forgive my ignorance, what's a dry-loop?

gooddomains 06-14-2006 07:23 AM

With the reference to Vonage I guess it's a copper pair used for DSL only, ie no standard telephone service.
