NEW YORK - Students are using a new ring tone to receive messages in class -- and many teachers can't even hear the ring.



Some students are downloading a ring tone off the Internet that is too high-pitched to be heard by most adults. With it, high schoolers can receive text message alerts on their cell phones without the teacher knowing.

As people age, many develop what's known as aging ear -- a loss of the ability to hear higher-frequency sounds.

The ring tone is a spin-off of technology that was originally meant to repel teenagers -- not help them. A Welsh security company developed the tone to help shopkeepers disperse young people loitering in front of their stores while leaving adults unaffected. The company called their product the "Mosquito."

Donna Lewis, a teacher in Manhattan, says her colleague played the ring for a classroom of first-graders -- and all of them could hear it, while the adults couldn't hear anything.

defently can hear it, but in a class room, any class room that has more then 2 computers, any kid can defently get away with that.

That's ear piercing, I can see something like that being suttle in a class room but damn, that hurts to listen to it.

I am 30 and I can hear it, its not annoying to me though as I have lost a lot of that high pitch noise detection from 8 years of the Military however I would be able to hear that in my office if I was the only one there

They had it on TV and I could hear it and I'm 44. Why don't they just put the damn phones on vibrate like the rest of us have been doing for years??!!

Im 42 I couldnt hear it , my wife 26 and my three dogs all heard it. Im fucking old lol

I think everyone can hear it... It would be hard for a teacher to hear in a large classroom, but if they can't see/hear kids talking/text messaging on a cell phone in class than they are deaf and blind.

I can hear it, it hurts, but I can hear it. Although in a loud class room I wouldn't be able too. But if it was quite and everyone was taking a test for example that would be noticeable.

That may be the most annoying sound I've ever heard. It may depend on the speakers and volume though. Maybe it's different on a cellphone.

lol thats crazy im 20 i can hear the shit loud and clear. brought my coworker in here hes 34 and couldn't hear anything at all.. weird i was playing it over the speakers loud too.

I had my phone on vibrate in class (college) and it vibrated right off the table and onto the floor at the quietest time of the class. Everyone turned around and looked at me. It was funny... I think the single beep or just silent is best.

I think with this ringtone it depends on the volume and the distance of the phone. Where as younger ears would be able to hear it at greater distances.

so what would you consider the age for a kid to transverse into an adult? what if your still a kid at heart? or your like 40 and your so mentally fucked up that your mine will never grow? could you hear it then?

Most people can hear it from what I can tell. I think this is a trick to get buzz and sell the hell out of this ringtone. I bet it's sold several million in the past week.

I love it. that is so fucking awesome. That's what stupid fucking people get.

You know why that sound was created? It was created to play at shopping centers to keep teens from hanging out in front of the stores. They play that annoying high pitched sound that only teens can hear, so adults can shop without being bothered by kids.

Now, the kids (obviously smarter than the stupid adults) took that technology and are using it to their advantage.

That is what it's all about.. taking something that someone created to screw you over, and using it to screw them over...

39. can hear it perfect. ear splitting sound. Hate it. I use to do SPL car stereos years ago and thought I had maybe lost some of my hearing due to it, but looks like Im fine.
