Zoe attempts black and white photography *Zoe nudity inside!*

Hah. So i've been taking a Photography class over the summer, and for the first time i've been using a manual camera. Who would have thought it would be so hard.

Anyways, our first assignment has to be a self-portrait shot. I will say that I mastered all the lighting and settings on the camera, developed and processed my own film, and did my own enlarging. For my first time doing it, I think it came out pretty nicely. What do you think?

comments/critiques appreciated, i'm sure there are many photographers can give me some better lighting/staging ideas :)

B&W photography is fun as hell, the whole process of doing everything yourself is very rewarding. Looks like you're off to a good start.

NoWhErE 06-12-2006 02:39 PM

very nice pic

CheeseFrog 06-12-2006 02:47 PM

Lot of hot spots in that pic, and the contrast is on the heavy side. And worst of all, there's not enough boob'age!!!

-Turk- 06-12-2006 02:49 PM

^5. Nice. Creepy wallpaper though. >=o)

i like the shot :thumbsup

i still prefer shooting manual film cam over digital :upsidedow

if anything... i would burn the corner by your head if possible to make it a bit darker so the eye doesn't keep focusing there :)

I've been to quite a few photography workshops and have been though lot's of critiques by some very good pros. And I've done some B&W printing so I have some experience to draw from. Since you asked for it, I'm going to be on the harsh side, not to be nasty but to give some things to think about.

I like the concept but the execution needs some work. The worst thing for me is the big white blotch from the light above your head. This draws the eye from everything else going on. Second, the left hand wall could be printed a lot better. You probably want to dodge the wall so that the exposure is even and not blown out in the upper left. Third is the angle your holding the camera at makes the things on the shelf look like they're going to fall off. I'd try tilting the camera in the other direction, which would also might get rid of the light.

The most interesting part of the photo is your back in the mirror, but that's also the darkest part of the photo. You might think about reshooting it with the bathroom light off and a lamp on the floor pointing up at your back to light it properly.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas to play with.

lickmymonster 06-12-2006 06:20 PM

You need to do somthing about the contrast range of the scene. Then shoot more film. Get the exposure and development time standardised. You won't be able to get a good print because that negative is underexposed and overdeveloped.

Lots of good sites for variations of the "zone system"

You need to base your exposure for the shadows and then develop for the highlights.

Spunky 06-12-2006 06:22 PM

Was hoping for a frontal shot..looks good btw

fetishblog 06-12-2006 06:23 PM

I like the shot, but I'm not a photog. ;) Zoe, hit me up on ICQ, 1183251, I'd like to talk in depth about more pics like this.

DeanCapture 06-12-2006 07:25 PM

I have to say - I wouldn't change a dayum thing. I really dig the full-frame printing that you did with the rough edges - very nice.

When I was printing my own black and white, I would file out the neg carriers so I could print my shit full frame and get nice rough edges as the borders. I loved doing my own darkroom work but I hated the smell of the stop-bath :winkwink:

I hope you'll continue to showcase your artisty here for us?

:thumbsup

Yeah, I plan on going back and darkening up the corners. The photo itself is darker in person, but some evening couldnt hurt. Thanks so much for the reangling idea though, i'll play with it some more :)
