Someone explain to me how the World Cup works.

Okay, im not a big fan of soccer or (futbol) but even i can watch a few games every four years.

So how does it work.

SO far i see that there are five or so groups.
EX:
Groups: A B C D E

Each one has 4 teams. They play matches and are awarded points for wins, draws, goals, etc???

And how did the initial teams get there.

Explain please. :thumbsup

Oh and some team lost today 1-0 cause of an own goal?

How fucking dumb is taht, i bet that guy gets his house raided by an angry mob cause he scored an own goal and cost his team the game haha.

sonofsam 06-10-2006 05:01 PM

a bunch of guys run around in short shorts and slap eachothers asses

oh and if they so much as even tap another player, the player will fall down like he was shot in the back of the head with a handgun, and roll around in excrutiating pain and emulate giving birth to an elephant...

sometimes they also kick the ball into the net too....

but all that aside, i fucking love soccer... best sport ever ! :)

in brazil one of the players scored on themselves by accident... and they were executed...

soccer has the craziest fans out of all the sports

Manowar 06-10-2006 05:02 PM

there was like 3 year build up qualification process where the teams all played others to decide the final 32

the own goal today was an accident, kinda like bounced off his head from a long cross.

And how do they pick who is the one team for U.S.A or England or Germany.

Cause i know England and shit has like 1000 teams.

Manowar 06-10-2006 05:04 PM

out of the groups. two from each go through to the second round.

these all then play each other to leave the quarter finals, onto the semi finals then the fine.

theres a national coach who picks the best players from each club domestically. this team then is the national team, can change a lot but is usually the most well known players from a certain country, irrespective of their normal teams.

Alright,
now how does the point system work? How do you choice which two in the group go on to the next round?

Alex 06-10-2006 05:07 PM

And if you said that teams have been playing all year to qualify? That means that the players play those three years on thier respectful team and the national team?

the 4 teams in a group play each other.

3 points for a win.
1 point for a draw.
0 points for a loss.

top two then get sent up.

if points are equal, it's number of goals scored during the matches which counts.

Relish XXX 06-10-2006 05:10 PM

If you win a game you get 3 points, draw 1 point and 0 if you lose. Each team in the group plays each other once. The two with the most points then go through a the knock out stage.

the national players can play for ages, david beckham is on his 3rd world cup (seeing as they are once every 4 years its pretty long).

they can be replaced in the national team anytime, come out for a few months of injury of stuff.

they change domestic teams a lot but that doesn't affect the national side.

basically if they are the best player in their position in the country, they get chosen for the team and stay there until they aren't.

Yep. That is why their is football 24/7

polish_aristocrat 06-10-2006 05:18 PM

national teams play every 2 months or so

domestic clubs usually every week... players play in their national teams because they love their country and also because they can better promote themselves on the international scene that way ( and can find f.e a better club in future )

so every two months f.e the best English players ( those with english nationality playing in the english league, as well as in other european clubs) get togethwr for 3 days training and then they face f.e Greece in the qualification stages

if they win their groups on a particular continent, then they qualify for the WorldCup

polish_aristocrat 06-10-2006 05:21 PM

nowadays the world is so money driven that the International games get slightly less popular and the clubs rivalisation more popular, but overall the worldcup is and always will be the main soccer event in the world :thumbsup

a country like Germany gets invaded by tens of thousands of fans from all continetns.... must be an amazing atmosphere, and sucks that im not there ( getting tickets was almost imposible, the demand was so big )

Don't forget they also get up and walk it off without a problem once they see the ref won't call a foul.

One of the Paraguyan players did a classic. First he is tackled fairly in the penalty area and goes down mortally wounded screaming for a pen...his teammate collects the ball and shapes to shoot...the player who is down gets up quickly as he is in the way...his teammate shoots and misses whereupon the first player promptly collapses to the ground again in fake agony trying to get the penalty from the first tackle...

Like the ref was going to fall for that one!

scottybuzz 06-10-2006 08:30 PM

the ref sucked

scottybuzz 06-10-2006 08:33 PM

and if you think shorts are shorts now, you should have seen them in the 80's
