dallas cruiser fatally hits man in wheelchair

A man in a wheelchair died early Wednesday morning after a Dallas police cruiser hit him, investigators said.

The accident happened at about 1:45 a.m. on Corinth Street at Industrial Boulevard.

The victim was rushed to Methodist Medical Center but later died.

Investigators said Sr. Cpl. Kenneth Strauss was going northbound over the Corinth Street bridge when the accident happened. The victim was traveling southbound in his wheelchair in traffic lanes when he drifted into the northbound lanes and the officer struck him, police said.

Police confirmed Strauss was on his way to help other officers on a call but he did not have his sirens on and was not speeding.

Another driver witnessed the accident.

The name of the victim has not been released.

Strauss, who has been with Dallas police since July 1991, is being counseled.

Investigators are trying to determine if the accident could have been prevented.

Yep. Vegas just had a sad story. Police cruiser doing excess of 90 on the highway with no lights plows into the back of a large car killing 3 and seriously hurting a pregnant girl.

Just happened a little over a month ago :(

The street is kinda the wrong place for a wheel chair. Wasn't there and don't know if there was a sidewalk to ride on? I have seen some stupid moves by people in electric wheelchairs and handicap scooters where I live.

Those electric scooters can be dangerous to people on the side walk though. The driver may be more than physically handicapped.

Feel for the officer, how would you feel if you ran someone down in a wheel chair. Not exactly a day maker at all.

They admit that the officer was responding to a call for help from other officers....YET......was not speeding.

What's wrong with this picture? Imagine it in your mind THEIR way. If we take their explanation seriously, then the officer was showing total disregard to the traffic around him as he gently meandered around the neighborhood, enroute to help his friend.

LEOs must think we're all as stupid as they are!

I wonder how many zeros and commas are going to be attached to that lawsuit?
