I survived Bethlehem Steel! [PICS]

Yesterday I had the opportunity to freely explore and photograph the old abandoned Bethlehem Steel plant in Buffalo, NY. Along with a few pals, we spent a very exhausting but enjoyable day hiking through all the old buildings and taking pics as we went.

Here's a few faves:

Those pictures are amazing!

Enema 06-05-2006 12:42 PM

I don't understand how they can just let that stuff go to rot.

Surely they'd be able to sell it off, or sell off some of the stuff inside!

emthree 06-05-2006 01:12 PM

That's fucking creepy.

ContentSHOOTER 06-05-2006 01:21 PM

Great pictures!

Brought back some icky memories...I used to work in the metal industry (sales). The mills only look marginally better when they're in use.

they are so cool, i am going to have to try and find some places like that here in aus.

have you ever thought about geting them framed and selling them, they would look hot on a wall in your house.

I remember driving by there all the time when I used to live there when I was growing up. It's amazing what happened there and in Niagara Falls at the old Hooker Chemical Plant. My Grandfather and Great Uncles on my Mom's side all worked at Hooker in NF and it was strange being back there last year and seeing how dead that place is now. Didn't get a chance to go over to Bethlehem but the pics are cool.

sniperwolf 06-05-2006 10:40 PM

cool pictures.. by the looks of the place, looks like you had a hard time breathing in and out.. thanks for sharing

Yeah, the panels were still lit up and humming - but I'm not sure exactly what they were feeding hydro to. None of the buildings we checked out had power to them.

Thanks Batts. Yeah, eventually some day I'll go through'em all and pick out a few cherries to print, matte and frame. And at some point I may do a public gallery or exhibition of them - perhaps sell a few. I've sold winter landscape shots in the past, but abandoned photography I haven't tried marketing yet.

Liquid Houdini 06-06-2006 06:49 AM

How do you get in to places like this? You always seem to find the coolest things to shoot.

HpicAnn 06-06-2006 06:57 AM

Those pics make me feel looking CSI :1orglaugh

Nice pics !!

The Bethlehem Steel plant in Bethlehem is impressive to drive past at night. It looks like the sky is on fire.

Thanks a lot for sharing these. I made the one with all the old school desks my wallpaper. Totally awesome. You should really do a limited print thing and sell them. If you ever do please let me know. :thumbsup

Donny 06-06-2006 09:34 AM

How'd you get inside?

pornguy 06-06-2006 09:37 AM

I find it truly amazing at the amount of money that gets wasted in a plant like that. They may have closed, but a lot of the things inside there are woth a ton of $$

Quite easy, actually. There's various ways to access the property, and once there all the buildings are wide open. They're in the process of stripping and demolishing it all - so they don't appear too concerned with security. No patrols or guards at all.

Plus the place is so massive - security would never find anyone amongst all the buildings, conveyors and junk.

There are always a few of those, especially in tunnels. Poor things go down and get trapped.

I always thought Bethlehem Steel was in PA, :1orglaugh. Guess I was wrong about that.

It is in PA..used to drive by it all the time as a kid and a good deal of my family worked there in one form or another. They must have had more than one plant.

Julia does well with her books. If you want some links to amazon for hers, let me know.
