My 10 year old son has a myspace account...should I be concerned?

My 10 year old son (just turned 10) has a myspace account and has all kinds of girls hitting him up. They even call my house during the wee hours of the morning.

I wouldn't be so concerned but he has some pretty fucked up pictures posted and he totally fabricates what type of person he is on that page. Should I be concerned?

Sounds normal enough to me. But talk to him about who he contacts and more importantly who contacts him. Pay attention to his behavior, diet, schedule, etc. The more personal details you know about your son, the less others will.

:2 cents:

Just tell him to keep away from the priests...

This is why the internet gets blamed for shit instead of parents. My kid will be 11 on friday. He doesn't and would not be allowed to have a MySpace account. He doesn't have an e-mail address nor does use any kind of messenger. And maybe it coincidence that he's never been approached by a pedo online or seen any porn online. Strange how that shit works.

reynold 06-04-2006 07:47 PM

Right. Know his contacts and see if you have common friends there..

jacked 06-04-2006 07:47 PM

just block myspace and save yourself the trouble

I must be wrong, because I'm in the minority... but I have to disagree. I think it's great for kids to have email, and communicate with kids from other parts of the world. I agree that parental involvement and control is crucial.. but is restircting ALL online communication really the right answer? What about your children's online social abilities? Shouldn't they be developed as well?

Its the only answer, kids should not have access to the net without a parent.

Yes you are wrong. "online social abilities"? Those are for those who lack social abilities with REAL people. Hell when I was 11 the Atari 2600 was NEW technology.

What kid needs e-mail or messengers? When I was a kid and we wanted to talk to other kids who were not right in front of us we either used the phone or walkie talkies.

I would have to agree with you! No way would I let my son or daughter (when I have one) have an my space account that young. My best friend who is in the adult world also, has a son. He is online but ONLY when my best friend or the kids dad is around and only to cartoon sites that he watches on the tv. There would be no way the kid would know what my space is at that age!

My best friend also has filters to stop other things and there is no way he would allow him to have any kind of messenger. Email I doubt also, but never has even came up.

His son isn't it on verry much but if and when I have a child, I know I wouldnt let him do allot of things including not having a myspace account, not having an email and not having a messenger!

online social abilities ppfff give me a fucking break , what sort of fucked up shit is that

if your concerned about your kid , you had better step up and be a fucking parent and stop using the net/tv/computer as an electronic babysitter

Hey whoa! Easy there... I don't have kids.

Just wondering for when I do. I think times are changing, and kids are changing, too. Could be important to keep the two in sync.:)

This isn't your thread. A general ? was posted asking for feedback. So I posted mine. If the poster only wanted feedback from parents, then they could have let me/others know in the thread title, or any a post. That hasn't happened. Perhpas not your place to police this thread?

CC 06-04-2006 08:46 PM

Yes, I would be concerned if I were you.

Of course not. So when someone here asks a question about computers or cars I don't expect him to want people to answer him that have expertise in those areas. How silly.

I'm not policing, but you don't see me talking about brain surgery. Why? because I'm not a brain surgeon. Funny how that works. When you are actually a parent come back and talk. You'll admit how wrong you were.

Way to ruin a perfectly good thread.
