Job - $1300 1st day

My girlfriend called about a job in the local paper being a "secret shopper", going to stores, buying something, then reporting back to the company how the customer service is. They told her during the phone interview that if she got the job, she would recieve her 1st assignment in the mail.

Today she got the first assignment, $1300 check and she's supposed to goto Walmart, use MoneyGram and send $1200 to some lady with the same last name as my girlfriend. Then keep the other $100.

Now I'm not sure about this as to me it sounds like workin' for the russians laundering money. anyone ever heard of a job like this before?

Hotrocket 06-03-2006 11:59 AM

sounds fishy to me...I would bet that the check is going to come back as stolen or fake and your GF is gonna be on the hook for the $1,300...

Sparks 06-03-2006 12:00 PM

Wow, that does sound a little weird. Have you done a search on the internet about the company name?

spacedog 06-03-2006 12:01 PM

Nigerian check scam.

Paparazzi 06-03-2006 12:02 PM

siccmade 06-03-2006 12:03 PM

In the papers it says the company is Incentives S.P.A

But I havn't been able to find anything about them online.

Ron Collier is whose signed on the check.

spasmo 06-03-2006 12:03 PM

That's a scam run by this guy:

http://www.paul-birdsall.info/

Google Payten Data Services or 212-461-2787 (his latest number being used to promote the scam) and read all about it.

The check is bogus.

polish_aristocrat 06-03-2006 12:04 PM

xclusive 06-03-2006 12:05 PM

weird scam

DatingGold 06-03-2006 12:12 PM

The check is defintely going to come back bad. Have them ACH or wire the money and you'll see they won't do that.

I can't believe the stuff people fall for.

Manowar 06-03-2006 12:12 PM

madawgz 06-03-2006 12:22 PM

yoooo thats a serious scam, why the fuck couldnt they do that themselvs!

MarkMan 06-03-2006 12:22 PM

scam
if it was a real customer service test the most would be $100 and a $15 payout to her.. but not $1300

that's kind of obvious

Rictor 06-03-2006 12:43 PM

Heh...people are still falling for this shit? The check is bad. You send them $1200 and two weeks from now your bank will tell you that the check they sent bounced. You'll be responsible for paying that money back to the bank.

yota71 06-03-2006 12:56 PM

Sometimes they will send another check for even more. Friend of mine just lost 4,000.

um_designs 06-03-2006 01:00 PM

scamapalooza.

if its legal, info about them can be easily found.

hezochiah 06-03-2006 04:43 PM

Some asshole tried to scam me like that with a guitar I put up for sale on ebay and he had just registered that day. I told him to Fuck Off but still lost the fees for the auction because ebay's a fucking joke when it comes to enforcing shit. At least you found out before she went through with it.

u-Bob 06-03-2006 04:51 PM

classic scam...

nestle 06-03-2006 04:54 PM

Did you have to sign anything?

I don't understand why people get scammed, you should just deposit the check and don't send them anything and see what happens. ;)

and still lose because I have to pay the bank a fee for bounced checks I think?

Fuck all of that. But I want to report it to someone. She was just looking through the local paper for a job and almost got scammed. I wonder how many others around here got took.

RogerV10 06-03-2006 06:13 PM

I believe check cashing places use a system that can verify if the check will clear or not. I know that the company that verifies the checks guarantees them. I went to cash a $1300 check at one when out of town and it was a holiday, they said I would have to come back the next day when they can verify it.
