Sen. Brownback wins. Bush to sign new TV indecency bill

http://www.latimes.com/business/la-f...lines-business
Quote:

The House is expected to approve a Senate bill Wednesday that includes a tenfold increase in indecency fines to a maximum of $325,000 for each violation. The bill, called the Broadcast Decency Enforcement Act, unanimously passed the Senate last month.

President Bush is expected to sign the legislation, ending a more than two-year quest by lawmakers and family groups for tougher indecency penalties after Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" on CBS during the 2004 Super Bowl halftime show.

"This is a victory for children and families," Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.), the sponsor of the Senate bill, said in a statement Friday.
This comes just as the FCC rejects CBS's appeal and orders that their $550,000 fine for Janet Jackson's Superbowl 2004 half-time exposure will stand.

The AFA and other "family" organizations are flooding the FCC with complaints to take advantage of their new power.

Many broadcasters are deciding that ending live programming may a necessity to protect themselves from things out of their control:(

Brownback's next goal is to get the rules extended to cable and satellite:Oh crap

What's the fine for filing a FALSE report?

WTF can't they turn the TV off? Even the cheapest Wal-Mart tv has and add and DELETE channel function. This is why Jesus freaks are hated. When are they going to get we do not want them to tell us how to live? Don't see me trying to get The 700 Club off the air. I just choose not to watch it.

They really need to be congratulated on this - it's just awesome.

Now.. back to the real biz. When the fuck are they gonna start doing real work and fix the ecomony, clean up N.O. and start repaying the trillions they borrowed so far? DUH?? :pimp

GatorB 06-03-2006 07:19 PM

By the way $325K is less than the price of ONE 30 second ad on a top 10 TV show. Big whoop.

its not one fine it workss this way :
The record indecency fine was handed down in March, when 111 CBS affiliates were each fined the current maximum of $32,500 for a simulated orgy scene on the series "Without a Trace." The total penalty of $3.6 million has since been cut to $3.3 million. Under the FCC's new rules, the fines could have been as much as $36 million.

The problem is most of america doesnt follow this shit but they start trying to fuck with their sopranos and deadwood they will start to wake up. Also wacko religious groups love writing letters. The Janet Jackson thing it was like 5 people made 90 complaints to the fcc. When was the last time anyone of us was part of a letter writing campaign?

Unfortunately, since what is considered obscene is so objective from one person to another it would be hard to prove a false report. Besides, they don't need to. As soon as their watchgroup flags anything remotely qualifying they send out an alert and start mass-complaining. Last year one of their sites had a state by state breakdown of the over 50,000 complaints they had generated.:Oh crap

OK.. so I know there are real national priorities to handle first :1orglaugh

BUT.... after the flag burning, abortion rights and gay marriages - you think maybe then we could address healthcare, the economy, trade deficits and try and ship some trailers to New Orleans for housing after we collect the rest of the bodies from under the rubble??

I'm 100% sure it's in good hands and will be handled in an efficient manner - after abortion, gay rights and the flag issues are dealt with :pimp

I dunno, there's still some old folks getting a break on their medicine and you know, now that broadcast TV has a indecency enfocement law the cable & satellite "eyes on the prize" just might be in grasp. So many morals, so little time to decide which ones get the last of the "political capital"....

:Oh crap

He's tag-teaming with Frist, who catupolted this legislation by side-stepping the consideration the senate was scheduled to have and convincing them to go for the already approved bill of the House, which although is less than what they wanted it is something they can get done now. They have more than enough votes to approve it on Tuesday and Bush will sign it the following day.

If Frist is in the Whitehouse in '08 Brownback will likely land a nice cabinet spot:2 cents:

That's good mardigras! It's nice to see progress like this...

But.. do you think we will have time to collect the bodies from N.O. or reckon it's better just to let them rot away? That would save some labor cost and less work for the pathologist/coroner I suppose. There's a bright side to everything eh? :winkwink:

Hell yeah.. I'm being too fussy - apologies! :1orglaugh

Those bodies are long rotted which is beyond the scope of a coroner and would take DNA testing. This cuts into tax breaks and Iraq and since the government has already made pretty face in the press when it counted this is no longer a priority.

If new Orleans wants to know who's rotting around they will raise property taxes.:2 cents:

NTSS 06-04-2006 11:51 PM

Ah.. OK.. forget the bodies - they are kinda .. well, dead anyways. Back to gay marriage. :pimp

But then.. can we address trade deficits?? It IS getting kinda urgent and these strange Chinese people are sneaking in and buying up assets. :Oh crap

We're just a couple steps away from everything being 'pre-screened' by the government before it airs.

Only my :2 cents: worth madawgz, but I don't like this nasty wet hairy pussy stuff anyways while I'm watching TV. Good drama with a few decapitations and blood spurting and sipping a bloody mary is much more appealing.

BTW... Don't know the law or anything... but there was/is some laws covering broadcasting in NY where stuff had to be "censored". Part of the programming was for lingerie - very tame stuff, but the cleavage of models was blurred to comply with the local laws. Could hardly believe it was that bad considering there were adult stores all along the street where the hotel was.

So who is running the countdown clock on Senator Browneye getting busted for diddling small asian boys in his spare time or some other strange sexual fetish?

Matt 26z 06-05-2006 06:48 AM

It's only a matter of time before they attempt to regulate the internet in this manner. I've always said the day will come when the FCC has power over the content that Americans put online.

The groundwork for this was laid when they passed the law making .us whois privacy against the law. Little by little they will grab power over the internet.

People need to realize that the FTC works on complaints. These AFA type groups are very well organized and send in massive complaints. Wrong or right, that's the way the system works. Want to see changes? Start writing your congressman. Start your own campaigns.

The AFA is a very well funded and organized group and more importantly, they are full of VOTERS. If you were a senator, who would you be trying to please? The very people who voted you into office or the lazy people who sat home on election and did fuckall but complain on a couple message boards?

pornguy 06-11-2006 01:51 PM

They dont understand this concept. At all. Of course, the public continues to tolerate it. There has been no outcry about it. And tyranny marches on.

You need to be saved from yourself.

they are here to protect you.

next they will wrap you in bubble wrap and put on blinders so you don't see anything nasty, like when they send all those helpful young people to keep iraqis from a certain death.

yuppers.
