Did you wear a helmet when you were a kid?
You know, back in the 70's when I was growing up, the kid with the helmet was always laughed at.
Unless you were playing hockey or working construction NO ONE wore a dorky helmet. If your mom made you wear a helmet to ride your bike or skateboarding the other kids would ridicule you mercilessly and beat you up for years. Nowadays every kid is the "kid with the helmet" ha ha times have sure changed. :D |
Only when playing football and hitting in baseball. Never when biking, boarding or playing hockey.
i never did for the same reasons as you pointed out. Mind you i've been hit in the head with a bat and have fallen off a bike and smacked my head when i was younger and i'm just fine now! :)
never wore a helmet...

Amazing that no one in my circle of friends from back then got any major head injuries. :1orglaugh |
i never did
nope....just when i was trying out my cousin's motorbike
Kids where helmets when cycling there bikes. I never wore one although I did pick up a concussion when I crashed once so maybe I should have.
nah, i never wore a helmet on the bike :))
ah man. i was that kid with the helmet too. my mom was a trauma nurse for years and forced me to wear a helmet all the time.
i begged and pleaded with her to get me a BMX style helmet because they were cool looking and i would actually wear it, but she never wanted to spend the extra money, so i would just wear it up the street and then strap it to the handle bars. she was clever though, her network of friends in the neighborhood kept her informed and i almost always got caught. shit, she knew about the first time i smoked a ciggarette almost before i did. ah, back in the day... |
only when the short yellow bus came to pick me up to go to this 'special' school other than that, no.
I don't even recall seeing bike helmets for sale in stores back in the 70s. No one I knew ever wore one in the neighbourhood.
And only a small percentage of NHLers were wearing brain buckets back then. Crazy how times have changed that way. Now kids are so decked out in helmets and pads...they look like the freakin' Michelin man. Scrapes and scars were a rite of passage in the old days. Evil Knieval style. Somethin' to brag about to your buddies. |
Wearing a helmet was considered daft when I was a kid too and I never wore one. It's a good kids view the helmet as something positive now. It's a life safer.
Ya no way would I put a helmet on to ride my bike.
We all get smarter as we get older. |
No, but many people will tell you that I probably should have ;)
Never wore one when riding the bike.
i still wear my helmet
I'm just waiting for the walking helmets and swimming helmets to appear. You never know when someone is going to walk around the corner of a building in to you, or jump in the pool and land on your head, right?
I was born in 1985... and no :P

ha ha.... you're not a bubble boy are you? |
my parents bought me one and I took it off every morning when they where out of sight to my trip to school
no parents even thought we should wear helmets as far as i can remember. the only time my mother suggested it is when i started skateboarding but she never kept it up. although she did buy me some knee pads/elbow pads after i ripped myself up once.
i don't even remember helmets being a option as a kid in the 70's.
here in florida any kid under 16 is required by law to wear a helmet while riding a bike. |

I never wore a helmet when riding a bike while I was growing up. I do now though...
Fuck ending up being brain damaged...... |
I never wore a helmet when riding a bike and I still don't today. Sure, people will say "what if you take a wipe out and land on your head?" Well, over my lifetime I've taken 100's of wipe outs and never once smashed my head open. To top it off I have a severe leg disabilty that makes it very hard for me to walk yet I've never hurt myself that bad on my bike and I ride it like a nutcase. If it was a motorbike then yes, I would wear a helmet. Not for a pedal bike though.

neither would some kids mom owning one so her kid could use it :1orglaugh in my case a helmet in the 70's was not a option and i lived to tell about it :) |
I'm glad I didn't. I've seen dad wearing it and he ended up losing all his hair. :)
I did. :) :upsidedow :)

Are you sure you weren't the kid with the football helmet? :1orglaugh |
Never wore one as a kid. Then again, the helmets were really large and inefficient back then. The helmets were commonly football helmets. They had poor perifrial vision and were heavy as hell. So they probably caused more accidents then they prevented.
Only during kickboxing trainings! :)
I did not.. but a friend did and nosedived into a block of concrete and boy did he struggle afterwards..
I wore one when I played football, hockey and baseball but never when I rode a bike...
My child has a helmet and hands and legs protections but she do not wear it when she ride on the bicicle because it is a waste of time for her.
i never wore a helmet in my childhood. In fact, we didn't have any in the shops!
today's kids and parents are pussies.

Only when playing baseball or ice hockey. Only disabled kids wore helmets to ride bikes and skateboards.
I don't make my kids wear that shit when they ride their bikes, fuck what the useless house wife mothers of my kids' friends think. Let them scrape their knees and bump their heads. That's how kids learn, that's a part of growing up. Teach your kids how to behave responsibly and how to keep safe. In my opinion all the kids who are completly babied by their parents these days are going to grow up to be weak, dependant adults. Real parenting is at an all time low in this country. |
